Preamplifier power supply
Hi Chris . . . it's a mistake to so superficially "analyze" both the engineering decisions and marketing motivations behind any consumer product . . . it's true that there are many questionable design and engineering practices behind many speciali...
Phono Cable Suggestions?
Hi Raul . . . do you find that certain cables are better suited to certain cartridges . . . i.e. having low capacitance being critical with high-inductance MM cartriges, etc. etc.?Also, have you a preference for shielded-twisted-pair versus plain ...
Album Storage
For classical - I like to arrange them chronologically by the year of the composer's birth . . . then within each composer I arrange in order of increasing ensemble size. Then there are a few extra small sections for related stuff . . . i.e. all t...
Plastic female RCA connector
Maybe somebody used an interconnect on them that gripped the females' grounding sleeves very tightly, and upon removal this part of the connectors got yanked out? Not a terribly uncommon occurance.
Favorite Telarc releases.....
Brahms' "Ein Deutsches Requiem" with Robert Shaw and Atlanta on Telarc is a definitive recording in so many respects - especially with regards to the choral performance. Also, Arleen AugĂ©r was one of my very favorite sopranos, and her performance ...
Spectrum analyzer?
I use and recommend SmaartLive (software on a PC) which is the industry standard for pro live sound work. In addition to RTA functions, it has real-time transfer function measurement . . . which is a much faster, more stable, and more accurate dis...
Thrift store finds?
Dynaco ST-70, PAS-2, and FM-3 as a set, priced at $50 . . . but it was half-price day at this particular North Miami thrift shop. I got them all for $25 . . . but this was circa 1991. Wouldn't expect it to happen again. Oh and they all worked.
DAC not working
I didn't quite catch the manner in which you have this stuff all hooked up, but are you sending a single source to two different preamps at the same time? This isn't necessarily a bad idea per se, but some (mainly older) preamps short out all the ...
Burr Brown OPA 2143 vs NJM2068
Typical bias current for LM4562 is 10nA. Taking into account possible unbalance of 10k we get 0.1mV unbalance. Good, keep going. Calculate the effect of the input offset current based on the higher of the two source impedances, and add that. Then ...
Burr Brown OPA 2143 vs NJM2068
Change to LM4562 and you might be able to remove this cap. With emphasis on "might", like in bold print, or a big neon sign. The LM4562 is indeed a good sub candidate for the 5532, even though it's not for the TL072. And the 5532/5534 is definately...
Burr Brown OPA 2143 vs NJM2068
I was referring to the original poster's question - the OPA134 family is excellent, and I can see no reason to sub . . . other than the convienence of what parts one has lying around. While I don't think the reason of "it's newer!" is in and of its...
Burr Brown OPA 2143 vs NJM2068
Generally, not a good sub. OPA2134 is FET-input (higher noise voltage, lower noise current) and NJM2068 is bipolar (higher noise current, lower noise voltage). This means that they're optimized for different circuit impedances. What's wrong with u...
fuses - the $39 ones or the 85 cent ones
Be careful, Eldartford -- feedback!! Gain's got to be pretty cranked, and the cushion as you well know is most effective at higher frequencies. Please don't blow something up trying this out . . . the terminating resistor is the best way to be saf...
fuses - the $39 ones or the 85 cent ones
I was curious about the theory that vibration applied to wires and/or electronics would generate some kind of signal.Try this. Get a male XLR connector, and solder a 50-100 ohm resistor between pins 2 and 3, and connect pin 1 to the XLR shell - th...
Linn Basik LV-X vs. Grace 707
I have experience with both (on an LP12), and much prefer the Linn . . . I think the manufacturing quality is better, and it's less fiddly to set up. The Grace's the anti-skating, with both fishing-line AND a pivot/weight thingey, mounted to a sep...
