How do you stop house guest from damaging your speakers? @mapman +1
Learned something new today and it isn't good. Pre-emphasis is very likely dead IMHO, because ripped CD's data doesn't carry pre-emhpasis bit. A lot of people use servers and music with pre-emphasis would sound bad (+9.5dB@20kHz) without de-emphasis. Some ripping programs might contain plug-i...
Learned something new today and it isn't good. Pre-emphasis was a way to reduce tape noise from analog recordings. When studios started recording digital there is no use for it. CD contains pre-emphasis bit engaging de-emphasis built into every player automatically.
Advice on Speaker Wiring - Larger Advent w. McIntosh MA6500 Amplifier / Speaker Settings Wire on a roll is also called an inductor. True, but cable in not a wire. It consists of two wires producing opposite magnetic field (since they carry identical currents in opposite direction). That's how non-inductive bifilar resistors are w...
Advice on Speaker Wiring - Larger Advent w. McIntosh MA6500 Amplifier / Speaker Settings Not even taking into account inductive reactance, resistance will be substantial. Gauge 16 is about 4mohm/ft making 0.8ohm per 2x100ft. I would keep it as short as possible and use thicker wire. Coiling unused cable would make no difference, b...

Audio-grade rectifying diode? When transformer's sinewave voltage becomes smaller (at the peak) than capacitor's voltage diode becomes reverse polarized. In spite of reverse polarization it will conduct for a moment in reverse direction (limited response), to snap back to zero...
Cloning an SSD for a Music Streamer I use Carbon Copy Cloner (MAC only program) for that - fantastic program. In default configuration it makes copy identical to original by dealing only with files that are different working really fast. For Windows you can try Acronis TrueImage. I ...
Ideal USB cable length, streamer to DAC? There is no direct effect on asynchronous USB delivered data, since no timing is involved (asynchronous), but there might be indirect effect by noise injected into DAC. This noise might come from ambient electrical noise induced in the cable or c...
best external drive for ripping CDs @noske Are you a lawyer? I’m asking, because the piece I quoted is, as I mentioned, from Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) - an organization that represent recording industry in the United States. This very organization has powerfu...
best external drive for ripping CDs You have to pay royalties. As long as you own media that pays royalties you are OK. Manufacturers of R2R tape pay tiny amount for each foot of the tape. Same goes for digital tape or Audio CD-R. Technically you could copy your friend's CD into...
Conditioning cds and dvds, before playing $1 per ounce is cheap, but spraying each CD top label takes time. It is much easier just to spray top of the CD player - once only and works for all CDs :)
Free MiniDiscs and portable player in Chicago area @gvking Unfortunately I will have many other chores (selling home). I doubt I will have time to prepare and mail the package. @arcticdeth I'm in Florida, coming back to Schaumburg in the second half of March. I will contact you then.
Bypassing Caps - what is it really about? Larger capacitors tend to have higher inductance and dielectric absorption affecting higher frequencies the most. Bypassing with smaller capacitor (creating alternative path at high frequency) improves overall performance. It also allows to use ...
