Conditioning cds and dvds, before playing
$1 per ounce is cheap, but spraying each CD top label takes time.  It is much easier just to spray top of the CD player - once only and works for all CDs   :)
Free MiniDiscs and portable player in Chicago area
@gvking   Unfortunately I will have many other chores (selling home).  I doubt I will have time to prepare and mail the package. @arcticdeth  I'm in Florida, coming back to Schaumburg in the second half of March.  I will contact you then.
Bypassing Caps - what is it really about?
Larger capacitors tend to have higher inductance and dielectric absorption affecting higher frequencies the most.  Bypassing with smaller capacitor (creating alternative path at high frequency) improves overall performance.  It also allows to use ...
Those singers you enjoy,....that don't really have a great voice?
Jimmy Scott
Jean Sibelius Recordings
Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra with Leif Segestram is wonderful and very well recorded (Pohjola's Daughter, Symphony #4, Finlandia).
When CDs first came onto the market in 1982 .......
I attribute the sound issues of brightness and sterility to be the fact that the DACs were still immature technology. Some of those early CDs sound pretty good on more modern players we have today. True, but it was immature process as well.  So...
patricia barber - diana krall - holly cole
Each of them sounded boring to me after a while. Dinah Washington held singing lessons for many other "stars". As for Melody Gardot - her story is amazing. As teenager she made money riding bicycle to local bars and playing piano - until she got h...

Advice & thoughts on DIY Recap/Restoration of vintage amp/equipment
@imhififan +1 If it is that old relays should be replaced anyway to avoid future problems.  It might be as simple as that.
Music Servers/External Drives
I rip to ALAC using free XLD with "max retry"  set to 200.  Recently I used internal Jriver (Media Center 30) ripper and it seems to be fine.  FLAC is more universal, but does not work with ITunes (that I used before) while ALAC is native Apple fo...
Advice & thoughts on DIY Recap/Restoration of vintage amp/equipment
Fix the problem first, then recap - otherwise you concatenate possible problems making it even more difficult to fix.  Also, I would make sure it is power amp and not the preamp (for instance volume control).  Once you are sure (by switching chann...
Do Amps matter.. in an Amp?
Your amp would likely need that much current to drive difficult load, but 60A current thru 1ohm load produces 3600W  !!!   These numbers might reflect good power supply, but have nothing to do with reality.  As for damping factor - the easiest way...
life span/failure rate of filter capacitors?
@audioman58   IMO capacitor dry out powered or not.  Unpowered capacitors are likely at lower temperature drying slower.   Electrolyte tends to eat out dielectric (aluminum oxide) reducing breakdown voltage, while presence of the voltage rebuilds ...
life span/failure rate of filter capacitors?
Each 10degC temp increase shortens capacitor life by 2.  It is simply drying out of electrolyte.  Drier capacitors have higher ESR.  At certain point current thru capacitors causes internal temperature increase.  Temperature increases ESR and high...
Perception and Watts: Doubling of power
I found this equation in article about perceived loudness: L[%] = k^(1/3.5)  where k is ratio of power. According to this 200W amp will sound 21.9% louder than 100W amp. 150W/100W ratio will make it 12.3% louder. Somehow it is easier for me to ...
