Too terminate or not
audio2design, I agree - inductance (important factor) will be similar to lamp cord while capacitance (less important) will be on high side.  Dielectric constant of cotton is very low (1.3-1.4), but for oiled cotton (why?) it is over 3, increasing ...
Best Patricia Barber or Keith Jarrett Album ?
Keith Jarrett - still "Koln Concert"Patricia Barber - "Verse"
Why are digital streaming equipment manufacturers refusing to answer me?
Audio2design, You're right - that's probably what he was talking about, otherwise it doesn't make any sense.  He says "My system uses fiber optic cables. These go all the way to the dac", hoping that optical connection, shielding DAC from electric...
Why are digital streaming equipment manufacturers refusing to answer me?
So I claim that: if your dac receives a bit perfect signal and it is connected via fiber optic, anything prior to the conversion to fiber optic (streamers, switches, their power supplies, cables etc) make absolutely no difference. It is simply not...
Old Ferrofluid, new tweeter?
helomech, Most likely it is not completely dry or very thick, but just dried a little - changed viscosity.   Parts Express sells ferrofluid that is Ferrotec APGL11 - good for both tweeter and midrange, but they sell different fluids with different...
*WHITE PAPER* The Sound of Music - How & Why the Speaker Cable Matters
Let’s forget nonsense about reflections at audio frequencies and concentrate on frequency response. Increased characteristic impedance is not the reason for the signal attenuation at the high frequencies - increased inductance is. Same attenuation...
Too terminate or not
I replaced banana with spades on my multi individual strand cable.  I bought Audioquest spades but standard crimper did poor job.  I borrowed Audioquest crimper (almost identical) from the local Audio store and it worked perfect.  After crimping I...
Is a balanced XLR cable inherently less critical than a single ended RCA one?
As long as source and the input are not ground related capacitance between wire and shield has no effect, but capacitance between wires still exists.  Dielectric with lower dielectric constant will reduce capacitance between wires.  Signal wires i...
*WHITE PAPER* The Sound of Music - How & Why the Speaker Cable Matters
It correlates because spreading wires apart increases inductive reactance that is dominant factor here. The idea that 7m speaker cable is a transmission line for audio signals is insane, IMHO. For 20kHz signal you will need about 1000m long spea...
Does it matter the wire gauge used in interconnects?
@ozzy  I should've explain better in my last paragraph, that gauge 18 would be even fine even for the speaker cable, while for ICs it doesn't make any difference.  Gauge of IC wire should be thick enough for easy handling.  That's perhaps why Acou...
Does it matter the wire gauge used in interconnects?
@ozzy  AWG 20 sounds OK.  My Acoustic Zen Absolute ICs have gauge 20 wires.  I assume you're going to twist wires.  XLR are usually twisted.  Twisting exposes both wires evenly to external electric and magnetic fields reducing interference pickup ...
The cost of LP's and CD's - an observation
And I remember the price of a CD being raised to $18.99. I believe Tower records initiated this with the record labels. That’s when I stopped buying new discs.I buy used CDs on Amazon and rip them to HD.  Ripping program can "renew" pretty much al...
The cost of LP's and CD's - an observation
One thing that should be considered is longevity.  CDs backed-up on HD can last forever (can be restored), while LPs will develop over time more noise and pops (that I cannot tolerate).  Of course one can make analog tape copy or digitize LP, but ...
*WHITE PAPER* The Sound of Music - How & Why the Speaker Cable Matters
Rule of thumb says that cable becomes transmission line (reflections from impedance boundaries) when signal propagation one way is longer than 1/8 of the fastest transition time.  When perfect square wave is applied all cables behave like transmis...
Class D Technology
+1 noble100, I was an enthusiast of class D amplification from the start. I replaced my (medium quality) class AB amp (Cambridge A3i) with one of the first class D amps (Rowland 102) based on the one of the cheapest Icepower modules (200ASC) and w...
