Are there any tube amps that don't give off any---
Benchmark AHB2 class A/B power amp (2x200W@4ohm) runs very cool (SMPS, modulated power supply rails).  It was designed to sound neutral/accurate, so perhaps you can use tube pre, if you like warm sound.https://benchmarkmedia.com/products/benchmark...
Have you changed your mind about a brand? Was it you, or them?
Agree on the beer.  My biggest disappointment was with the Hyperion Sound, the maker of my wonderful HPS-938 speakers. They had speaker of the year for 8 years in the row and speaker of the decade awards from Absolute Sound, not to mention they ha...
I'm never going to hear a megaspeaker in a good room am I?
Eric, Perhaps one day I will buy speakers in $20k-$40k range.  I had Daedalus top range speakers in mind (Zeus), but the only place I can hear them is at the manufacturer's listening room.  Nothing wrong with that, since I can get best advice and ...
Power Conditioners
The main problem with power conditioners is filtering.  Any impedance in series affects dynamics of the power amp.  Linear power supply draws current in narrow peaks of big amplitude.  Amplifier demand of 1A at given time will draw about 10A in na...
Can I use 24 gauge speaker cable?
Please answer my question - do tube amps sound bad?  They have additional fraction of an ohm output impedance in comparison to SS.  Why can't you understand that amplifiers with few ohms of output impedance can sound fine.  At this point I'm out.
Can I use 24 gauge speaker cable?
You could've used megaohms or gigaohms as well. We’re talking about small fraction of an ohm difference, that speaker manufacturers don’t even consider worth mentioning. Atmasphere MA-1 power amp has 2.3 ohm output impedance and great reviews. Do ...
Can I use 24 gauge speaker cable?
100Hz is too strong, in most cases, and small resistance in series helps to reduce it, since there is also impedance dip at this frequency. Nobody talks about kiloohms - that’s not a valid argument. All I’m saying thin speaker wire might change sou...
Can I use 24 gauge speaker cable?
sjeesjie, AFAIK biwiring can have effect on the sound by eliminating skin effect (I don’t believe it’s audible) and by reducing back EMF injection into other xover section by separating them by impedance of the driver+wire / impedance of the amp o...
Can I use 24 gauge speaker cable?
Dynamic speakers, in general, have their lowest impedance at low frequencies and small gauge wire will result in reduced bass. Not necessarily. Many speakers have impedance dip around 100Hz - bass reflex hump. Taming it might be a good thing. I too...
Can I use 24 gauge speaker cable?
1. Resistance: About 0.5 ohm in series with the speaker for 10’ cable. It will affect the sound with changing speaker impedance, but you might like it.2. Damping: For membrane damping 0.5 ohm doesn’t make much difference since there is already at ...
Theoretical Pre Amp Question
Benchmark's recommends highest gain settings at pre and the lowest at the power amp.  They provide option of 22dBu (9.8VAC) input in AHB2 power amp.  I understand that they want to move gain from noisy environment (power amp) to quieter environmen...
A long harsh digital trip - final meter?
USB cable shouldn't matter with the data delivery, but might inject electrical noise as any other cable connected, especially connected to noisy computer on the other side.  Selecting cable with good shielding, to avoid ambient electrical noise pi...
Surge Suppressor Basics
I use furman Elite 20 PFI, that uses similar scheme. Big inductor in series followed by big capacitor (parallel). They claim it can provide 55A peak current. Most of linear power supplies draw current in short pulses of big amplitude and this arra...
