Why are there so many Mac users?
Paulsax - I went thru all DOS and Windows version in last 25 years nad now have Mac Mini for about a year. Oh my God - what a difference. The problem is not only that Windows is clumsy and unstable but that Microsoft doesn't fix their own mistakes...
Why are there so many Mac users?
Let me give you example how bad Windows is. Every time new program brings new version of certain DLL (dynamic link library) older programs might stop working because it has the same name and new DLL was not fully tested with existing programs or o...
Why are there so many Mac users?
Mac OSX is based on "Free BSD" (Berkley Software Distribution) that derived from Unix. It is even more stable than Unix for the following reason (quote from Wikipedia): "FreeBSD is a complete operating system. The kernel, device drivers and all of...
DAC that re-clocks for under $1000?
Realremo - Benchmark is not on the warm side. It is pretty neutral and resolving/revealing. I have class D amp (Rowland 102) that is also neutral and resolving. Combination of two with my previous Paradigm Studio/60 v2 speakers was a little bright...
DAC that re-clocks for under $1000?
You can read about Benchmark's technology here: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul05/articles/benchmark.htmAs far as I remember at 50GHz most of samples are redundant. This frequency is not real (1 million times oversampling) and is based on stat...
4 ohm load vs 8 ohm load? What is prefered?
"should get peaks 3dB higher into a 4ohm load than an 8ohm load." - 15.7% louder is easier to imagine than 3dB."The damping factor is only relevant when you solder the output devices to the speaker terminals and use active cross overs" - I don't k...
4 ohm load vs 8 ohm load? What is prefered?
Casouza - I agree. I believe that great specifications are often a contrary indicator of sound quality. I would, for instance, avoid amps with thd=0.00001% at any cost.Higher df might be of some value since xover inductor in series with the woofer...
4 ohm load vs 8 ohm load? What is prefered?
With 4ohm you gain 15.7% of perceived loudness but loose almost 100% of damping factor (120 vs. 230). Choose speakers that sound better to you - forget numbers.Perceived Loudness = k^(1/3.5) where k is a ratio of power.
Warm to Neutral Speaker Cables under $800?
I second Acoustic Zen Satori. U use Shotgun biwire version (still within your limits).
The Best Cable??
Hazard - I had AQ King Cobras XLR. It used to be called Python before AQ moved production to China and renamed cables lowering prices to stay competitive. King Cobras are pretty good with natural/balanced sound (more refined than Diamondbacks). I ...
Want to Blow Up My Stereo
Aggielaw - You mentioned swapping speakers. Did you physically swapped speakers or just swapped amps channels. Did you do both? There is still chance that one amp's channel might be weaker. Could you play 1kHz test tone and measure it on the speak...
SS bias pot tweaks?
Csontos - I agree that bias might not be set to optimum on particular amp especially for the best channel match. If you can find sweet spot by listening - great. You might want to measure just to know where you are. It is voltage drop measurement ...
SS bias pot tweaks?
AFAIK bias should be set to particular value. I asume you expect better performance setting bias higher. Increasing bias most likely won't improve the sound (otherwise everybody would do that) and is called overbias. Bias is usually set around 50-...
equating class A to class AB SS amps?
I noticed now "Many thanks for all the helpful replies! Now I am less confused" Mark, I hope you don't feel more confused after my post (I tend to complicate things).
equating class A to class AB SS amps?
Mark - When you listen to 200W peaks your class AB amp really delivers to speakers on average only few percent of peak power. It is because music is not always at the peak and half as loud means 1/10 of power. In addition there are gaps (unless yo...
