Why not magnetic tapes in stead of vinyl records?
Onhwy61, Do you expect to be alive in 2089? Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs data retention is rated 100 years. Same for SanDisk flash memory. I need only 30 years - no issue for me.
Why not magnetic tapes in stead of vinyl records?
Kijanki, I'm not having a cow- its pretty apparent you jumped in without reading the rest of this thread:The original question was "But, why don't they just copy the magnetic tape to other magnetic tapes and sell us those?"I've tried to explain i...
Why not magnetic tapes in stead of vinyl records?
Ralph, where one gets analog recordings? Where to store thousands of tapes in proper temperature and humidity? How often to rewind them to avoid print-through copying? Ampex recommends rewinding within 3 years of storage (and to keep track of it)....
Why not magnetic tapes in stead of vinyl records?
Practical, flexible and easy does not equate to best sound To get absolutely best sound I could hire Symphony Orchestra to play in my home, but it would be expensive and impractical.
Why not magnetic tapes in stead of vinyl records?
Ralph, that's true, but practicality is important at home as well. I've heard opinion that best analog TVs were better than modern digital HDTV. I don't question that, but it perhaps was very expensive set in studio conditions, plus analog broadca...

Why not magnetic tapes in stead of vinyl records?
My friend works for large recording studio. They got rid of all analog recorders long time ago. Before that they had people assigned to rewind constantly tens of thousands of tapes in the archives to prevent track to track copying. Don't forget hi...
Is Audioquest clean and fast?
King Cobra was called Python before AQ moved production to China and lowered prices to stay competitive. I had them before (XLR, 0.5m) - It was more clean/refined than AQ Viper. Viper replaced Ruby adding extension on both end and tighter bass (pu...
Lead shielding
Mapman, mu-metal is great for magnetic shielding but it is expensive and difficult to form since after bending it has to be annealed.Choice of lead is not the best because it is toxic and has high resistivity - 10x higher than aluminum. RFI can ge...
How to configure Jriver 19 to Airport Express
Dasign, but how do you connect DAC2 for DSD. If it is by USB cable can you use it in asynchronous mode for PCM?

Why not Itunes?
DAC woes - what to do
Lightspeed240, Benchmark is very revealing often showing problems in the system. It is also very clean - in fact so clean that some people call it very accurate but sterile. It is due to jitter (noise) suppression. It upsamples to equivalent of mi...
DAC woes - what to do
Lightspeed240, I cannot comment on the other DACc but I have Benchmark DAC1. It has a lot of resolution, nice extension and tight bass but it is not warm or sweet. According to technical director of Benchmark John Siau it was purposely designed no...
External CD/DVD drive for Mac Book Pro
Rabbani, check if your XLD has setting of number of retries. I set Max to "do not allow to skip" but I could also set number of retries like for instance 200. Set it to the highest number. Some programs allow to verify overall checksum for CD with...
External CD/DVD drive for Mac Book Pro
I'm not sure I understand your question. AFAIK every drive has error correction since it is part of Reed-Solomon coding. Up to 4mm scratches along the track it autocorrects, between 4mm it interpolates and above 8mm skips. All this applies to musi...
