Well Recorded Classical Symphonic Recordings HINT....pick up a copy of Stereophiles latest "Records to Die For" and that list will contain information as to both quality of sound and performances for many classical artists and composers
Enjoying "Affordable" Equipment another alternative, Send your 103 to Zu for a new body. They know what they're doing and the difference between the stock 103 and their upgrade raises the 103 to a great cartridge
Speaker placement Quandary I am using an Anti-Mode 2.0 Dual Core room correction device that covers the entire sound spectrum....but I only use it for signals at 200 Hz or lower. I also use one SVS 4000 sub for frequencies below 45 Hz. The main speakers are Harbeth 40.1's a...
New R2R DAC Forgot to mention that these have gone up in price. Recent check of prices seem to hover around $500 for an S1 chip....hopefully you may find one less expensive but make sure that S1 or S2 stamp is on the chip
New R2R DAC to desktopguy: I performed the mods myself. Requires obtaining a chip puller and removing existing chip and carefully inserting new chip. No soldering needed for this step. Removing existing large caps is an exercise in careful removal of existing...
New R2R DAC If you are handy with a soldering iron and not afraid to work on the chassis main board, get yourself a MHDT Orchid and modify it by replacing the standard 1541a chip with an S1 or S2, then change the two large output caps to a more expensive Mund...
Music that has a hold of me beyond understanding If you have ever attended a 'live' performance of Beethoven's 9th symphony(he had been deaf many years before this was written) YOU HAVE TO PINCH YOURSELF AND ASK.....How could anyone during that time period ever compose a piece like that!!!!!!!
Luxman vs Accuphase for Harbeth 40.3 XD For the past 5 years I've been using Classe 200 monoblocks to drive my 40.1's....superb sound, transparent midrange, very smooth highs, great impact in the bass....reminds me so much of my Quad 57 ESL's
Vinyl Lovers Check out Sweet Vinyl.....they make a noise suppressor (aka tick and pop remover) that really works....even if you can't remove the last traces of dust/gunk, etc their noise filtering system works marvels and makes old noisy records sound like new...
How Much Do Aesthetics Factor Into Your Decisions? WAF rules in my house so I had a special hardwood cabinet made to house all of my equipment including 2 turntables, 2 monoblock Classe amps and all sorts of other electronic components. When not listening to music, the cabinet remains shut and...
Ruminations On CD Players If you purchase an MHDT Orchid and you're handy with a soldering iron, you can do much more to upgrade this DAC to a more analog sound by not only tube rolling but replacing the large 2 uF caps with much higher quality caps and investing in an 'S'...
my shortlist for integrated Harbethsuper hl5 plus xd - please advise I'm using Classe CAM 200 mono blocks to drive my Harbeth 40.1's. You may be able to pick these up on the secondary market. Terrific sound-smooth, no edge, plenty of spare power. This is the type of amp that Alan Shaw recommends=lots of brute power...
$50k - $80k Budget…Opinions please. Since you liked your previous Harbeth's, if your room is large enough, you can purchase a used Harbeth 40.1 or 40.2 for about half or less than original price. Add good solid state amps like Classe monblocks, a good tubed preamp like Audio Re...
Upgrade to moving coil advice I would suggest a Denon 103 to start with....and after listening you can have it modified by ZU(about $200) which brings it to another level of sound quality. It's a lot less expensive than the Dynavector and is equal to the Dyna's sound
Ultimate stereo nightmare I had the same problem....hired a technician to get on his knees and find the problem. Turns out it was a loose locking ground jacket on one of my RCA input plugs from my amp to the preamp. All is well now |
