Conrad Johnson amps: premier 12, premier 8,LP275M
I had the Premier 12 + 16LS combo for a few years. I really liked it. The 12s offer that classic warm caramel CJ sound from before the turn of the century. But yeah, they are a bit less articulated and slow on the bottom end than more modern CJ ge...
cat jl3 signatures vs. atmashere ma2III's
Samuel33, I'm not sure what your concern is. In his review of the CAT JL2 Sig mk.2, Marc also used a CAT preamp and the ARC Ref 3 preamp. For the record, he wrote:"I used the JL2 Signature Mk 2 with CAT SL1 Ultimate Mk 2 and Audio Research Referen...
Phono preamp/stepup recommendations
Yes - thank you! I've heard good things about Herron, but never had a chance to listen through one. Wonder how it would stack up versus some closer to its price range such as the Rhea or the Pass Xono units or beyond such as the Lamm or CAT.
Phono preamp/stepup recommendations
Roger - with new Herron VTPH-2 preamps running over $3.5k, could you please say which more expensive phono stages did your audio group find consistently beaten by the Herron? Thanks!
Largest Impact - Arm or Cart?
A great tonearm with an average cartridge will outperform an average tonearm with a great cartridge all day long. This is spot-on advice. Listening to a great cartridge on a average arm you may never hear all the cartridge can deliver. And you migh...
Stand out phono stages
Exlibris - hi, I've heard the IO (non-Sig) a few years ago in a system somewhat different from mine, but have not had the opportunity to hear it in my own system to compare with the MP-1 mk.III. I think its fair to say both are 'stand out phono st...
Anyone recommend a neutral tube amp?
The CJ 140 is one of, if not the, most neutral CJ amp I've heard, though by direct comparison it still hints at their house sound, the CJ golden/caramel tonality. My sense is that CJ began moving more toward neutral starting w/ the likes of their ...
Anyone recommend a neutral tube amp?
"...no warmer, cooler, lighter, darker, or sweeter than the music it transmitted." Atma-Sphere amps and preamps are by far the most neutrally transparent electronics I've heard in my system.Albeit an 87dB sensitivity, specs on the Opera Callas mon...
Top ten tube preamps
If you have heard *both* the ARC Ref3 and the Atma-Sphere MP-1, would you kindly share your opinion. TIA
Stand out phono stages
What phono preamps outshine others by a big margin, those that can be considered the last phono preamp ever needed. Here are 'last I'll ever buy' phono stages to consider, in no particular order...* Atma-Sphere MP-1* Audio Research Corp PH7* Aesthe...
cat jl3 signatures vs. atmashere ma2III's
Having heard the M60s, MA-1 mkIIIs, and MA-2 mkIIs, I think its fair to say there is not much sonic difference between the Atma-Sphere amps, assuming a reasonable load. I suspect the choice depends more on speakers, room size, the 'scale' of repro...
cat jl3 signatures vs. atmashere ma2III's
They [Atma-Sphere amps] are incredible at untangling complex orchestral music while maintaining natural timbre and timing.Bingo! And when paired with the latest version of Atma-Sphere's MP-1 preamplifier, they're even better at this !Tim
Conrad Johnson PV 15 or 17LS?
Is the 17LS considered a generally better preamp than the PV 15?In a word, Yes. I agree with Chuck - the 16LS (mark I or II) is the hands down choice in my book.Tim
Tri-Planar with no anti-skate?
The TriPlanar has no A/S scale because Herb Papier understood that different cartridges track differently and that different records act differently. This makes any A/S scale arbitrary and essentially useless.Still, a scale gives a visual marker t...
Best rack for non-suspension turntable?
Cello - would you please say more about your SRA platform. I'm v. interested in their Craz rack. Thanks.Tim
