System that sounds so real it is easy to mistaken it is not live
I didn’t read all the responses but here’s my $.02. Of course nothing compares to good quality live music. There are too many steps along the way to reproducing music in our home w/ varying degrees of sound degradation.    For the type of music m...
Old school shootout: Snell A/III vs. Original B&W 801
I owned the A- III’s & really enjoyed them. I had a VPI turntable, Souther Linear Arm, Adcom Cross Coil cartridge, PS Audio preamp & then an Audible Illusions pre amp, Amber power amps& then a Conrad Johnson Premier Four power amp. Th...
Tonearm Parallel?
The late , brilliant AJ Conti of Basis Turntables said that he thought that being obsessed w/ “perfect” VTA was mostly a waste of time because records can be different thicknesses & can be cut to different depths too. And this was a man OBSESS...
So, I listened to a $1Million Dollar System
Dodgealum - fully agreed! I listened two different times over the weekend at the Capitol Audiofest last year to the big Von Schweickert / VAC system & came away baffled how it sounded nothing like live music!  After. Just a few minutes, I had ...
Vintage tube sound from a modern amp
The first & certainly one of the all time greats in this category you’re defining is the McIntosh MC 275! “New  & improved”  version sounds Excellent, solid build quality & a timeless design. To me, in its power range of about 90 real ...
What Gear Has Disappointed You?
NAD 7 channel Surround Sound Receiver. I forget the model ( sort of intentionally) but it was the top of the line & pretty expensive. Performed well, sounded quite good for both stereo music listening & for movie watching & had plenty ...
What should be mandatory in every professional published review-
snapsc- fully agreed & of course what ancillary equipment was used & what other equipment was tried w/ the reviewed piece.  Stereophile is good w/ this, Absolute Sound often not.

Good horn loaded speakers were designed & made in the 40’s, 50’s &60’s(Klipsch, Western Electric, Altec),  electrostatics in the 50’s, Good acoustic suspension & ported woofers in the 50’s & 60’s, (AR, KLH, Advent, JBL) AMT tweeter...
Speaker Suggestions $30K Sasha DAW competitor?
Of course speakers are a matter of taste & we all have aspects of music reproduction we value the most. I have heard several of the speakers suggested & liked most in different ways. That said, they all sound like good “hifi” to me & n...
Large Advents (1974) woofer pops with deep bass.
Bad surround may be the issue & hopefully no permanent  damage has been done., There are a few surround re- foaming kits available on eBay for short $ for the original Large Advents that are worth trying & because there were so many of the...
Pleasurably better, not measurably better
I love the “ Pleasurably Better”! That’s what enjoying music is all about. How we all get there when not actually attending a live performance is what this forum is all about. Whatever makes you happy is great regardless of how something might me...
So I was changing a lightbulb last night…
You can’t use a dimmer for fluorescent fixtures
So I was changing a lightbulb last night…
My guess would be the dimmer is the culprit & usually worse when they’re dimmed way down. Cheaper ones can even “sing” themselves. Try it both fully dimmed & fully open. Can also try replacing the dimmer w/ a better quality, higher wattage...
Who is Gonna Buy A New Jeep Grand Wagoneer For the MacIntosh Stereo?
Probably not the right forum for this but they can keep the crappy, unreliable Jeep & I’ll take the Mc. components any day. If you want a big 4 WD boat for substantial $, get a Toyota 4runner, Sequoia or the Lexus GX or LX ( w/ Levinson system...
The one time you want to pull out but she says no.
Check out Volti Audio Razz. Really good, very efficient, front ported & will likely sound good against the wall although imaging for virtually any speaker might suffer a bit positioned this way.
