What's all the fuss about late 70s and earl 80s run of the mill midfi turntables?
I had a BIC 960 table w/ a Stanton 681 EEE cartridge in 1974.  I think it was designed well w/ a decent arm & sounded pretty good but was built like crap & sold it before it completely fell apart. I then had a fully manual Thorens w/ an Or...
Are you interested in the new generation of "old school" design loudspeakers?
Moonwatcher - The new JBL 100's are better than the originals - I've heard both although not side by side w/ the same sources. They're still well made by a legendary, quality company. That said, if you're looking for big dynamic room filling sound...
Are you interested in the new generation of "old school" design loudspeakers?
If you think about it, just about every new speaker today is just an updated, possibly improved or modified version of an existing design which often is a good thing & are noticeably better.    The last truly innovative designs may be Magnepl...
Distinctly Digital Forever?
I went with the Border Patrol DAC for the same reason & along w/ an Innuos Zenith Mark  III sounds very good & not digitally fatiguing.  It’s not pricey  & You might check it out..
Harbeth 40.3's. Should I buy them?
From what I've heard from otherwise nice Harbeth speakers, if you want to rock out, these are not the best choice in any reasonably sized room regardless of the amp. Bigger Proacs & ATC's that I've heard are much more capable kicking some but...
top ten things you learned about HiFi on Agon
So funny!!!  For myself, there’s only one true measure of a sound system: DO I WANT TO KEEP LISTENING & ENJOYING  & TIME JUST  DISAPPEARS OR HAVE I HAD ENOUGH AFTER A COUPLE MINUTES? There can many reasons for either of those responses ...
Tube amps - what 3 things…
Many great suggestions mentioned. I might suggest you watch Roger of Rogers High Fidelity YouTube videos on tube amps & what he feels are important. There are a few really good ones . He knows his stuff! Obviously, he’s also promoting his own ...
Were you an audiophile in the 1980s and 1990s?
Some great memories here, thanks all.    I grew up in the 60’s w/ big Bozak speakers & Dynaco  amps ( my Dad’s), then into Large Advents in the 70’s ( one pair & then two stacked), then Snell A- II’s w/ an really nice Amber power amp. It ...
ZEN Mini S vs. Small Green Computer Sonic Transporter i5 music server/Ultra Rendu Streamer
I believe it’s often better to go for the best you can afford or save up your $ until you can buy what you really want & is good quality.  You don’t always get what you pay for but you definitely don’t get what you don’t pay for! I waited &a...
New Outlets Lead to Better Sounding and Tasting Coffee
Erik_squires - don’t many good power amps also have regulated power supplies? Why does the AC power they see affect them at times a great deal?
Some famous reviewers have atrocious listening rooms!
Some of these reviewers are long term experts who I think could probably discern audio differences even in crappy rooms & maybe it’s better they don’t have “ perfect” highly conditioned listening spaces because most of us don’t either? Many o...
New Outlets Lead to Better Sounding and Tasting Coffee
The “ kawfeew tawk” is so funny!   I have wondered for a while that similar to a good sound system, would better AC power delivery ( plugs, cords, conditioning etc) improve the picture quality of a good TV like my LG OLED? I would think it would ...
LOUDEST Concert and Tinnitus
I’ve been to many great & loud concerts since 1972 but I saw & sort of heard the New Riders of the Purple Sage w/ Jerry Garcia joining in at the Academy of Music in NYC in 1975. We weren’t even sitting close & in the mezzanine pretty f...
Better story teller than Edmund Fitzgerald?
Gordon is truly a master singer / songwriter & that is one of my all time favorites. He had many great songs that tell a story. Another o e is “Circle of Steel” on Sundown.  Harry Chaplin had two great ones also: Taxi & Cats in the Cradle...
Power cord - 5 ft vs 10 ft ?
My Dad was an EE w/ multiple patents (like my grandfather) & into hi fi from the 50"s onward. He was pretty smart & knew a lot about audio as well as electronics in general. He had a few different Dynaco power amps he built &  heavily ...
