best phono stage to mate with a London Decca Super Gold cart?
Over the summer I built a K&K Audio "Trio" for one of Kevin's customers and was very impressed by its performance. It faired very well in comparison to Kevin's all out assault on the SOTA, the Sonus Veritas Venice, a fully balanced differentia...
What's the benefit of balanced tonearm cables?
Balanced signals have greatly reduced common mode noise,Just to be precise, balanced signals can have common mode noise, maybe even a lot. It's that balanced circuits reject the common mode noise and only amplify the differential signal.
Low level hum only with lp playback
Do you only experience the hum when the cart. is lowered to the record? And not when the arm is sitting in its rest? If that's the case it sounds like the problem is induced hum (is the motor nearby?) and not a grounding issue.
What's the benefit of balanced tonearm cables?
If an RCA is used as a balanced connection, which is dicey due to the grounding scheme, the result is that it will be prone to noise pickup because of the imbalanced introduced by the connector itself. IME using a RCA plug to terminate a balanced ...

What's the benefit of balanced tonearm cables?
Balanced line and single-ended (RCA connections) are inherently incompatible. If you have one then its not the other. There is no such thing as pseudo balanced- that would simply be single-ended.He may have meant a balanced line with RCA terminati...
Trafomatic Audio Luna LCR phonostage
Lynn Olson did a study of the harmonic spectrum of different coupling techniques. His results might be of interest to those curious about IT transformers. The smooth fall-off of harmonics is especially noteworthy in the transformer-coupled circuit ...
Can I use a step up transformer?
3.5dbs means that the PLP needs to double the power and if the PLP was designed for at least 0.3mv output cartridges then its specs/overall characteristics could change in dramatic way. We're talking voltage gain here, not power. If a phono pre is ...
Can I use a step up transformer?
Please let me know, if for example: I own an active high gain PS designed for MC cartridges with at least an output of 0.3mv and things are that I own a cartridge with a lower output ( say: 0.20mv. ) that I really can't use it with.Maybe you shou...
What is more accurate: magnetic anti-skating, or barrel weight attached a fishline?
"I have read for years above the declining quality of vinyl used for LP pressings. "During the 1970s oil embargo and price spike the major record labels responded by making "ultra thin" disks (120 gram or less?) and upping the percentage of recycl...

sonnyjim - is that a reference to Robert Carradine's character on the TV series Kung Fu?
sub 2k phono stage
Is your passive pre resistive (resistors) or is it inductor based (TVC or autoformer)? The output impedance of the phono pre (lower probably better) could be an issue depending on the design of your passive unit. If so, SS or tube units with line ...
MM/MI Phono Stages
Absolutely! Kevin designed this as a easy kit. The most important thing is to have good soldering technique. The use of a temp. controlled solder station and good quality solder like Cardas quad eutectic or Wonder Solder makes good results easier....
MM/MI Phono Stages
I just finished building a K&K Audio Trio kit for a customer of Kevin's and got to listen to it for a couple of nights in my system. I was very impressed. This unit, the kit which costs $1395 in MM, pushed all the right buttons for me. Sparkli...
