Cary SLI-80 Tube amp suddenly blowing fuses
When you bias an amp you are setting the idle current in the output tubes. This is measured in mA. I think the confusion comes fronm the fact that different manufacturers use different methods for measuring this current. The Cary measures this dir...
An obscure question.....
As a satisfied owner of the K&K phono pre I concure with the Oz. Dave's differential parallel feed linestage is pretty special too!
Cary SLI-80 Tube amp suddenly blowing fuses
Probably won't if you don't stick a "bigger" fuse in it.

Could be a bad rectifier tube. If they short it will pop the AC fuse. Happened to me with a NOS RCA GTB. Tube tested OK on tester, but the higher voltages in amp would cause it to short.
D'oh I killed my cartridge...now what?
I had a dream the other night (nightmare may be a better discription) where I killed my Shelter 90X. Bent the cantiliver and tried to staighten it. Awoke with a sick feeling in my stomach but relieved that it was only a dream. Hope to hell that I'...
am/fm tube tuners
A Fisher 100b with some simple mods (replace power supply diodes with FREDs, quality coupling caps and a good tune-up, maybe replace the 12AX7 output tube with a 5751) will sound wonderful. These can be had on ebay for ~$200. Expect to pay $500-$8...
Krell amps and Tube Preamps - enemies?
Oldpet, the bass is just fine. The preamp is transformer coupled; it can't leak DC. Also, since it is a differential parafeed design, there is no DC at the input of the output transformer. That is how they are able to use a high quality mike input...
Krell amps and Tube Preamps - enemies?
Oldpet - I purchased the RA line stage as a kit which requires doing all the soldering. Most of that is to PC boards and the instructions are very complete. If this is a problem, it is available already built. I now have over 350 hours on mine and...
Krell amps and Tube Preamps - enemies?
Oldpet - log on to: www.kandkaudio.com or check out the K&K Audio sponsored forum over on the AudioAsylum. There was also a series of articles published in AudioXpress by Dave Davenport under the title "A Line Stage Odessy". A very complete ki...
Balanced preamp recommendations
Check out Dave Davenport's line stage kit at Raleigh Audio. It is a transformer coupled balanced parallel feed differential design that has worked "magic" in my system. This kit (also available built) has been the subject of a series of articles i...
Krell amps and Tube Preamps - enemies?
I just finished building and "burning-in" a Raleigh Audio line stage kit that was featured in a series of articles in AudioeXpress magazine. The circuit was in part inspired by an article on parallel feed circuit topology by Lynn Olson that appear...
Am I crazy - tube pre-amp with receiver??
That's what's "crazy". I'm using one of the component inputs on the Cary. Setting the volume control on the Cary to ~10-11 o'clock puts the volume control on the line stage @12-3 o'clock. Right now the line stage is driving my new 2A3 SET amp that...
Am I crazy - tube pre-amp with receiver??
I recently built a new line-stage from a kit. To test it, I connected it into my system ahead of my Cary SLI-80 integrated amp. Surprize; this sounded way better than the Cary alone. BTW - this is one sweet preamp: tranformer coupled with Lundahl ...
Need a Preamp Recommendation
Can you use a soldering iron? Check out the Raleigh Audio Line Stage at www.kandkaudio.com This unit has been the subject of a series of articles in AudioXpress magazine; the last in the Nov. 2004 issue. This preamp kit (also available built) uses...
Tube Whine noise...Please Help
Jig is pulling your leg. ALL tubes operate on the principle of "thermionic emissions". Without thermionic emission the cathode would emit no electrons and the tube would just be a pretty piece of glass. The noise you are experiencing is oscillatio...
