New Music Direct Catalog I had a chance to flip through this catalog today, and what jumped out at me was: What happened to speakers? When did they become so irrelevant?I mean $30K turntables, $25K preamps, $40K monoblock amps, and the most expensive speakers they carry a...
VAC 160iSE integrated with NOLA speakers Sorry for the delayed reply, life has been hectic. So far, I have not really experimented too much. I just plugged in some tubes that I've had good success with previously. As stated earlier, I am using the stock VAC KT88 tubes. In the driver stage...
Super-sensitive volume controls - remedy? You could try some Rothwell (or similar) in line gain attenuators between preamp and amp. They look just like RCA jacks, but they reduce gain by 10-12 dB.
Audiogon's new security Mitch2, the traffic on Audio Asylum is pretty slow. I've had much more success lately on US Audiomart, it seems like the traffic has picked up there.
Audiogon's new security They had to bump up security, since they just forced all of their members to turn over credit card information to them. They didn't want to be the next Target, Home Depot, etc.Personally, I'd prefer lower security, and not to have to give in to th...
New Music Direct Catalog Nice catalog to be sure, but it couldn't unseat my Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue for top of the stack by my listening chair. It is there for reading, under the SI issue though. ;^)
Why do designers/manufacturers...? 11-21-14: Response34Too many times a 'tweak' is not better, just different.Very true, and much more common than any audiophile would care to admit.
Tube Curious - Preamp Suggestions 11-21-14: SoixI think VAC is another good pre to consider but would likely sound perhaps a touch softer, lush, or more "tubey" than ARC, which may or may not be a good thing. While I do agree that VAC is a touch softer, lush and more "tubey" than ...
The first watts 11-21-14: Jmcgrogan2Power works on a logarithmic scale, meaning that 100 wpc will sound twice as loud as 10 wpc (+3dB).Whoops, that should read +10 dB. 10 times the power gives you twice the volume, or +10 dB. Sorry about that confusion. So 10 watt...
The first watts You are on the right track. Normally and amplifier will be called A/AB, where it will operate in Class A up to about 5-15 wpc then slide into Class AB. The Class A watts will be the first watts used, so they will go first. Power works on a logarit...
Tube Curious - Preamp Suggestions Well I'm going to go ahead and disagree with the first two responses. I've owned a few ARC preamps, including the Ref 3. If you are looking for a more musical, less analytical sound, the ARC sound is not for you. ARC represents the more modern, tr...
Single ended RCA preamp short list Agree with Shindo and Herron, CAT's, VAC's and older Hovland's are also great SE performers.
Is DEQX a game changer? 11-19-14: AlmargJohn, LOL! :-) I wonder what the "three amigos" would have to say about that. (To the others, that's an inside joke; don't ask). Come to think of it, though, I don't want to know :-)I'm glad someone got it Al, I knew I could count ...
Is DEQX a game changer? Has anyone tried putting a High Fidelity Cable Ultimate Reference Rhodium power cord on their DEQX? I'm just curious as to the effect that putting a game changing power cord on a game changing piece of electronic gear may sound like. Could be that...
Who do you trust? No spell check on that 6moons site? Toekn ad? If I were paying money, I would expect more professionalism from my journalist. ;^) |
