Rowland Model 6 monoblocks - my thoughts
I agree with most of what Raquel has stated, especially with the mid to late 90's being JRDG's golden years, and his reco for the Coherence II/Synergy preamps. I do have a couple of differences though, first being that I would still prefer a tubed...
Stereophile Class A and Frequency Response
I don't believe what they say, but unfortuantely Smeyers is right, far too many do believe them.FWIW, I find far better reviews and knowledge on threads here and at Audio Asylum. Sure, you will occasionally have the cloaked dealer, but overall the...
Stereophile Class A and Frequency Response
Call me jaded then, but I've been a subscriber for over 20 years, and I've seen the magazine grow into a glossy business rag. I wouldn't put integrity in the same paragraph as Stereophile anymore than I would put business and ethics together. Just...
Stereophile Class A and Frequency Response
03-05-08: Smeyers I find this disturbing that Stereophile would put the speaker in this category. Why do you find this so disturbing? Do you have some form of biblical belief in Stereophile? They are prone to the call of the dollar just as any othe...
Stereophile Class A and Frequency Response
Yes they still have 'Full Range' and 'Restricted Extreme LF', the B&W 802D's are listed under 'Full Range' which does have the 20 Hz stipulation. Yes the B&W 802D specs are 34Hz-28Khz +/- 3 db.My guess, as with all things Stereophile, woul...
Rowland Model 6 monoblocks - my thoughts
They are cool customers indeed. That's why I left them on 24/7 when I owned them. IMHO, it'd take them an hour or so to sound their best, when left on 24/7 they were always at there best. FWIW, I've owned a couple of Class A amps, the Model 6's so...

Well I finally met Bob and Gary today, and totally agree with Joe, they are very gracious and accomodating. Nice little shop they have set up in Bob's home. I dropped off my BAT VK-75SE and we chatted for a good hour. Bob really knows how to 'put ...
Rowland Model 6 monoblocks - my thoughts
Jeff, yes, a good preamp may well help you even farther down the road to nirvana than what you currently have. I also agree with Raquel, that running balanced works best with these amps. I haven't heard the top JRDG preamps as he suggests, and the...

Hi M. Stark, yes thanks for the update, please keep us in the loop. Steve Monte is one of the "good guys" in this hobby to be sure. I look forward to reading of your impressions.FWIW, how long did it take? While I consider this, and I did call Bob...

Well Jeff, you do know what they say, "patience is a virtue". It's not always easy in this hobby, but it is true nonetheless.Enjoy the music.John
Need quick answer- BAT VK3iX vs. BAT VK3ixSE
Sorry, I can't really say, but I did have the VK-3iXSE on loan for 6 weeks, and I really grew to admire it. It was, IMHO a real bargain at it's price point. I haven't heard the VK-3iX though, so I cannot say for sure.Cheers,John
Are passive preamps better?
In theory I totally agree with you Aleko. However, when using my ears as a guide, I've consistantly found that active preamps sound more musical to me. IMS, IMHO, YMMV.Cheers,John

02-25-08: MrjstarkJohn do you have something in mind - mod or repaire?I'm considering a mod to my BAT VK-75SE amp. I will look forward to your experience with your amps. I still have not heard back from Bob, though I may try to call him this week....
Rowland Model 6 monoblocks - my thoughts
Hi Jeff, I'm glad that you are enjoying the JRDG Model 6 monoblocks. I can't say that I am surprised, they were about the best SS amps that I've heard in my 30 years in the hobby. Yes, they (Rowland's) were surplanted by a tube amp, and I am happy...
