Tube amp for Quad 989???
Maybe so, Jordi, but we don't care what YOU think of Quad 988s and 989s; WE love 'em..
Should I replace capacitors in Active ATC's??
Lazarus, I know nothing of this slit-foil cap and looked for it. As far as I can see, this technology is available only in a 10,000uF/63V. cap.Mooner, probably the sound of those speakers could be improved by replacing the caps with higher-quality...
Denon 2900 Analog outputs...?
The front-left output is in parallel with the left output, and the front-right output is in parallel with the right output. A full set of 6-channel outputs are provided for driving the 6-channel inputs of a pre/pro/receiver, and a stereo pair is p...
Conrad Johnson PV10AL or PV10BL Preamp?
Also consider a Premier 14, their first tubed preamp with a remote control. Worth searching and waiting for, I understand..
Is "warm" a compliment or a criticism?
'Warm' is inherently neither good nor bad. It descrobes a tonal balance that has more energy in the lower half--say, below 500Hz--than in the upper half. (A tonal balance having more high-frequency energy is called 'bright'.)Warmth is absolutely a...
Phoenix, AZ
The club does have Special-Interest Groups. Maybe we could start a Saturday Nite SIG? (I'm a member.).
Setting 6-ch. levels isn't as easy as you think
I decided to pick one--the Chesky DVD-A--and live with it. If movies have too much bass, I'll reset the level for that movie.Maxcast, no bass with a DVD-V is NOT my problem--they have too much. The preamp sounds great, BTW..
6550 to KT88
I'm using 8 Ei KT90s in a pair of New Generations amps. They sound fine and have been 100% reliable for months..
Efficency- Low vs. Hi?
Interesting question that's been asked before. SEARCH for more info. There's no particular benefit to low sensitivity in moving-coil speakers that I know of, and low sensitivity is never a design GOAL, AFAIK. A designer may fall in love with a part...
Why is 2 Channel better than multi-channel?
"Why is 2 Channel better than multi-channel?"'Tain't. Music arrives at our 2 ears from all directions. Five channels gets it lots righter than just 2..
How to match a tube preamp to a solid state amp?
Unless you've already done this and you don't indicate you have, 'beg, borrow, or steal' somebody's hi-end 2-channel preamp and LISTEN. THEN if you're still convinced your preamp section is the culprit, I suggest you start with a conrad-johnson Pr...
all preamps gain and phase.
Jafox: "So maybe it is only audible on certain music....or I am simply deaf!"No, you're not deaf. Probably your listening skills are similar to mine--I can hear lots of differences but I definitely have a limit. Last fall, in a lengthy audition of...
Tube amp for Quad 989???
First, Sea, SEARCH for this; I believe you'll find lots of info. I recommend the c-j Premier Eleven-A. At 70 WPC it has plenty of power. I had one and loved it but wanted triodes. I'm now driving my 989s in my fairly large room (21 x 19 x 9') with...
tube amp dilemma with electrostats
I forgot to say earlier that I'm driving a pair of Quad 989s with New Generation-brand 100-Watt tubed monoamps, switched to triode--see my System here. They have maybe 40 Watts in triode, and that's plenty for my fairly large room and my listening...
tube amp dilemma with electrostats
Hmm...I'm not much for 'warm', because that turns into 'thick' VERY quickly for me, but I do prefer a little warmth to absolute tonal neutrality. I suggest a used conrad-johnson Premier Eleven-A. It's rated at 70 Watts per channel into 2, 4, 8, or...
