Quad vs. Martin Logan?
Int, I think Duke has given you an excellent summary.I have 989s* and they are indeed fabulous-sounding speakers. What I love about single-panel 'stats is their coherency, their 'all-togetherness'. It's difficult to describe and sometimes takes se...
KT-88 in Conrad Johnson Premier 11a
I've used Chinese KT88s and Ei KT90s in a couple Eleven-As and they bias just finely. Never heard of an amp designed for 6550s that wouldn't bias KT88s...but what do I know? :-).
bi-amping question
"More sensitive tweeters sounds like a good solution" to what problem? If the speakers you're biamping are 2-ways with only treble in the top end, you'll need probably only a few Watts to drive them. A Single-Ended Triode (SET and NOT 'set') with s...
suggest tube amp wattage for my speakers..?
How much power do you have now, as in 8-Ohm rating AND 4-Ohm rating? Do you feel you have enough power? Or are you clipping at your loudest levels now?.
bi-amping question
What speakers? HELP US HELP YOU! Hi crossover or low crossover?
DTS vs Dolby Digital?
GENERALLY, DTS sounds a little cleaner because its transfer rate is about double (or better) than DD's. IOW, the DTS track is compressed significantly less. The 2 also sound different because they're mastered differently, that is, by different peo...
Equipment that has made you 'stop' looking?

Audio Symphonies pre owners, tube questions
The 6X4 is the rectifier, not output tube. I have NO idea if it has any affect on sound. The center 12AX7 is the 1st gain stage and is used in stereo. The left and right 'X7s are the 2nd gain stage and the cathode follower, separate for each chann...
Thick 2" maple amp platform--couple or isolate?
Howard, that sounds like both coupled and decoupled, 'coupled' in that the sand certainly is harder and more coupling than pile carpet but not as much as a stiff spike. Hmm...What kind of floor?.
Where is Your Turntable?
Sold about 10 years ago.(Sorry, couldn't resist. :-) )
Antique Sound Lab 805 DT SETs--WOW
TYVM Trelja and Jb. I SURELY am enjoying the music more now; even movies sound better.$1100 for a pair of 805-powered SETs?I'll be modding mine a little bit at a time. For the 2 couplers, one a 3/1200(!!!!!), I'm using Mundorf's M-Cap Supreme Silv...
Biamping; Amps w. Different power ratings?
...and 'the same input sensitivity' doesn't mean the same number of volts for rated output, it means the same input voltage for the SAME output. If it's specified, that's usually stated for 1 Watt of output.Since your amps have slightly different ...
Antique Sound Lab 805 DT SETs--WOW
I think one reason the 805 isn't used more is that it's hard to drive, in that it takes lots of voltage. The ASLs use a 6L6/KT66/EL34 driver (in triode, of course) plus an interstage transformer to do that. The music sure sounds good. I have NOS RC...

Buy an Audio Research SP10 MkII or an SP11 MkII ?
My still-good friend and I were in the high-end-audio business in the early- to mid-'80s, and he knew LOTS more than I about these things. Here's what he said:"If he’s looking for a preamp with a vacuum-tube signature, then the SP-10 is his best b...
