Any good all wood component racks?
Snook, get one custom built by a cabinet maker nearby. I had a gorgeous rack made of solid oak to my specs for $800. Email me and I'll send you pics to give you an idea. ATB, Jeff
If there was Nobel prize in audio...
David, I've met many folks involved in quality audio, and some certainly stand out. I've sold semiconductors to most of these companies over the years, so I got to know their design philosophy and how/why/at what cost they do what they do. Dave Re...
The most important piece in a stereo system???
Garbage in, garbage out. You cannot improve the source downstream, it only gets worse. Get the best front end components you can (Analog, digital, tuner, hell even cassette deck). Build from there; having the best speakers, amp, wires, or room won...
Rap music on high-end speakers
Controversial thread. Growing up my dad hated my hard rock music, busted my chops every chance he could. As a young teenager he laughed at me for buying my first quality stereo (with money I raised cutting lawns, etc.). He felt my Thorens/NAD/Miss...
Words From the Wise
I'll try again, first attempt didn't post. - Spend as much on your front end components (turntable and CDP) as you do on your amplifer and speakers. Garbage in, garbage out.- Spend twice as much on your source material (LP's and CD's) as you do on...
NAD 3020 a viable option for a quality system?
My first quality audio system featured a 3020, I still have fond memories. Sold it to my brother, now I kinda wished I'd kept it. The 3020 represented value unlike anything I've stumbled across in audio gear (well, include the B&W DM302's in t...
Best MTV Unplugged?
Nirvana is a must have, and Rod Stewart is a damned fine recording as well. I loved the Clapton release but don't listen to is much these days. Maybe I played it too much early on, or maybe Tears in Heaven is just tough to listen to.
Opinions on a hi-end ? portable mini system
Another vote for the Classik. I like the Proac Tablette 2000's with my Linn, but I think a pair of Totem Rokk's would sound terrific too
Wall Mounted turntable stand: suggestions please?
Bob, the Target stand is 18" wide by 14" deep. I bought mine used here, $50. If this stand meets your needs you could probably get one by posting a wanted ad here on the 'Gon. Hope this helps, Jeff
Best speakers for a small room? 10'X14'
My home office is the same size, I'm using a Classe DR-8 to drive a pair of Martin Logan Aerius. Nice....
Studio gear vs. Hi-Fi gear Is Hi-Fi a ripoff?
Gil, interesting reading and you may be on to something. My only exposure to studios is the studio at Morin Heights, just north of Montreal. Gold and platinum records all over the walls, quite impressive. Name a popular rock band and they've likel...
Wouldn't it be nice...
I own two Classik's, put me down for a pair of phono inputs. I found it unusual that Linn would overlook analog, I suppose it was an attempt to keep the cost down?
Hall of Shame
Krell amps (I'm wondering if they drop them in boiling water to get them sounding so sterile?), Blue Point Special cartridges (they NEVER open up and are flimsy at best), and the worst component I EVER heard was a Threshold preamp. I had to use a ...
My system has just received the ultimate insult
Lots and lots of perfectly good dogs looking for a home at the dog pound. Dogs don't nag you to pick up after yourself. Dogs don't care if you eat cold pizza for breakfast. Dogs understand if the contents of your fridge is limited to liquids only....
I Need an Upgrade Path...Help Please
I own a DR-8 and Thirty preamp, nice gear. A turntable is required here. Systemdek, Rega, Revolver, or a Thorens are all reasonably priced. I think your preamp has a phono stage, add a decent cartridge like a Blue Point Special or a Grado and you'...
