Best sounding Beethoven symphony LPs
As a subsequent set, one has given me the most enriching experiences with the Beethoven symphonies yet: Scherchens mono set. I haven't heard everything, (who could?) but I've not heard more athletic, giddy, dramatic yet verdant Beethoven than this...
Miles Davis Prestige albums...
I have early 2nd pressings of "Cookin" and "Miles." (Yellow/Black labels with the little musical notes and "RVG" in deadwax.) They have a very unmistakable, vivid yet "buttery" sound that later reissues don't have.
Are our 'test' records adequate?
Thanks Halcro, re: Munch's R & J and Till, this one I have on a Shaded Dog, and don't recall any problems! (It's interesting that Munch is more fiery than Bernstein in the same material.) Great silky strings in the big theme of Romeo. Also, if...
Are our 'test' records adequate?
You know, another TAS-lister that makes me scratch my head is the Mercury Rodrigo Guitar Concerto. I have the RFR1 pressing, non-vendor and the massed strings in the climax of the slow mov't are pretty edgy!
lps chamber music like the old digital early 80's
There are so many miraculous performances available already on Lp!I can help you quite a bit. Chamber music on Vox can not only be stunningly-recorded, (look for Aubort/Nickrenz as sound engineers!) but the often no-name performers are excellent. ...
Are our 'test' records adequate?
"As for the question on assessing a system accurately?.... playing those 'difficult' records will objectively tell you if something is wrong whilst listening to the 'great-sounding' discs may not?"The cosmic issue is how to determine at what point...
Are our 'test' records adequate?
Here is a list of pretty popular, famous Classical Lps that my humble system handles, but not very flatteringly. I would love to know how your $25-$50k+ systems handle them:The last pages of the Reiner Pines, as mentioned above. The last pages of t...
Are our 'test' records adequate?
Halcro--I'm so glad (relieved) to hear your response to the shrillness at the end of Reiner's Pines!!. I thought it was my system. To calm my suspicions, I listen to the Maazel Pines on London/Decca..not a problem at all. The big question for me i...
Before I upgrade my cart from Dyna 20xl to an XX2
Well, I guess I have to try the Mint, will purchase today. I talked to my stereo guru and he's very fond of the Wright protractor, and it's what he used to set up my cart, FWIW. He has not tried the Mint.
Before I upgrade my cart from Dyna 20xl to an XX2
I will also definitely look into the Mint Lp protractor, since so many are happy with it. My Stereo guru who has been in the business for 20 years used some card with four points on it, and I finally went back to the VPI Jig. Everything sounds exa...
Before I upgrade my cart from Dyna 20xl to an XX2
Thank you for your responses. I want to carefully follow up (without being unappreciative of your time) and clarify that I don't believe it to be a tracking problem. I've had the cart professionally aligned a couple of times by an expert over the ...
Best CD
Ravel/Debussy Ameling de Waart/SFO Philips from I believe '79. It's an amazing recording and shows that careful mastering of a CD makes all the difference even early-on. The music--two Duparc songs, Ravel's Sheherazahde and Debussy's early but gor...
VPI Periphery Ring With Clearaudio Performance
I have the VPI Scoutmaster and ring, and the only thing I can think of is that there would need to be a minimum amount of clearance between the bottom of the cart and the very edge of the ring, which rides about a mm (or slightly less) above the s...
Damaged Dynavector 20XL
How is the Karat better? I've got the 20XL and I'm about to upgrade to the XX2. I've got a scoutmaster with JMW 9arm. Anyone have experience with all three?
Can good speakers take edge off digital?
Agreed with some of the other posters. Good Speakers (Vandersteen 3a Sigs) forced me back to vinyl after 25 years. (I still listen to CDs and SACDs)
