More convinced of analog than ever
I didn't see anything snobbish about the original post either. I've been off the Digital Bandwagon for awhile and would assume that the latest and greatest digital would surpass vinyl at this point. I think the original poster's *surprise* that he...
The Most Beautiful Song of The RnR era?
Not RnR, I believe, but Roberta Flack's "First Time, Ever I Saw Your Face," is one of the few pop melodies that I store with my Classical titles.
Vinyl sounds a bit thin and slightly strident.
What are you listening to though? Columbia or RCA from the mid-'60's to 70's? That would do it! If you have some London/Decca's such as Argenta's Espana, etc. and they sound thin and strident than something is wrong. I have a Scoutmaster/Dyna comb...
Last song on most LP's pressed with compression
The Perfectionist side...try not to go there. I've done it, but thank Darwin I don't have endless amounts of cash and therefore limit wasted time--it's so bad for the music. The first thing that happens is the culling of great performances for so-...
Last song on most LP's pressed with compression
You're absolutely right, but all delivery methods have problems; the "thinning" of sound towards the end of *some* lp's is indeed a compromise. But wouldn't you rather "waste" only a *portion* of your listening time listening to the end of an lp, ...
Can we go back to 33's please?
Jaybo, have you heard one on a good system?
Can we go back to 33's please?
Why? Why not treat yourself once and awhile? I have both excellent originals and 45 reissues of Prokofiev's Scythian Suite/Oranges (Mercury), Reiner's Mussy Pics at Exhibition, Saint Saens/Munch Organ Symphony and Ravel/Munch Daphnis. (RCA) Hear i...
How many great CDs do you have?
Two. : )
"Pictures at an Exhibition"
If you can find the 45 rpm Reiner Classic Reissue, wow. Reveal more of the CSO's sensitive playing which is desirable since Reiner keeps pretty tight reigns and I, personally, found it a little off-putting at first, while listening to the SACD. I ...
Columbia or Epic
The Columbia/Epic Artists were often served very badly by the recording team: Ormandy, Bernstein, Szell. As a rule, there's no point to even be concerned. You might get a little more warmth from the tube-pressed Lps--Gold label "strobe" Epic, and ...
Columbia masterworks Lps....
As a rule, the Jazz is very good in sound and legendary artistry. As a rule, buy classical Columbia for the *artistry* not for excellent sound--they should be ashamed about the latter. Even the two TAS listed issues: Walter's Beethoven 6th and Brah...
Cassettes.......pre-recorded and otherwise....
I found a Nak deck that really blew my mind, using a Telarc Cassette I picked up in a thrift for .25 cents. The theory is that even cassettes, with all their issues, might still provide a more "liquid" sound than CD's with their inherent bandwidth...
Installing a VPI stainless steel ring?
The Lp goes on first, then the ring is directly lowered. I've never had a problem with the rubber bands around the ring either. Regarding costs, they are manufactured by the people who make those doors which seal rooms for Bio-industies. They've g...
Reference Level Recording of Classical on CD's?
Strange, I don't recall saying anything specifically negative about CDs...the three I mentioned happen to have what I consider extremely above average--spectacular in fact--sound for CDs. Your quick and defensive reply reveals more about your own ...
Reference Level Recording of Classical on CD's?
After going to Vinyl after 20 years of Classical on CD, there are only 3 CD's I kept for their stunning performance and sound quality: Vaughan Williams "Job," with Barry Wordsworth on Collins, (re-released on Naxos, same recording); Ginastera's Pa...
