Why do some think "music" (not gear, trading, etc.) is the ultimate end?
Musicfan--  Ha!  I had a Ducati  some 50 years ago, that took far more time to keep running than to actually ride.  Learned a lot about mechanics, though, in the process. Same w/ my other bikes; that's the way things were before Japanese bikes too...
Why do some think "music" (not gear, trading, etc.) is the ultimate end?
just curious: is there anyone here who doesn’t care all that much about music BUT either (1) loves to design, build or tinker with gear (I assume there are plenty of serious "a-philes" who fit this category); or more interesting question (2) loves...
Name a few albums which helped determine your musical tastes
Cavalli, Ercole Amante (Corboz, cond.)Mozart, Cosi fan tutte (K. Boehm) Wagner, Gotterdammerung (Boehm, Bayreuth) Beetles, Sgt. Peppers Hendrix, Axis Bold as Love J. Airplane, After Bathing at Baxters Shostakovich, Quartets (Borodin Q.) Gould...
Easily the best and most significant sonic tweak one could ever make!
Interesting too is the fitting process.  They gradually (over a period of weeks) adjust them to compensate for whatever frequencies you've lost  (If they do it all at once, you can't tolerate it).   But the brain soon gets involved (as it does in ...

I need them too.  But I only use them in particular situations--never when listening to live music (bec. in a sense, am I not then listening to miked music through a bad stereo system?)
Plus and Minus
OK.  I thought we were talking about the difference between live and recorded sound (which is the topic you defined).  But  we were actually talking about whether we like shih-tzus better than bulldogs, or whether we are more moved by weather ball...
Plus and Minus
I have no idea what you mean by "if you like it, it's live to you."  That completely undermines your original distinction between live and recorded--that's the question at issue.  (There are plenty of recordings I prefer to what I've heard live.  ...
Women who enjoy quality speakers
There are many reasons, but one of the simplest is this.   I don't know what you do for a living, but if a woman does exactly the same thing, she is getting paid less.  And that few thousand difference?  There goes the discretionary spending that ...
100 W Tube Amplifier Malfunctioned
Maybe cc. the company a copy of this thread.
Favorite Symphonies Quiz
Cool.  Several choices here I've never heard or even heard OF.  Working now to correct that.  (I'm giving myself extra points if I actually own a recording of one of these.).    Atterberg??!!   And I thought Scriabin never moved from the piano bench.
Favorite Symphonies Quiz
PC--  I realize I'm in the minority on M8.  I've never liked it, and I only heard it live once.  LAPhil (forget who was conducting--prob. Dudamel during one of the Mahler cycles here) in the cavernous Shrine, easily the worst music venue in the wo...
Favorite Symphonies Quiz
Nice.  I'm having trouble w/ 1, so I'll just toss in Dmitri S. (I don't know that symphony at all, but I'm sure it's fine).  Took some shuffling (e.g., the obvious Gorecki 3 changed to 4, which if you haven't heard it ROCKS!), moving Mahler and Br...
Tube Amp lower power vs higher power and cruising volume
You "absolutely love it"!  Then why change?  (Of course, audiophilia is an aspect of life, and I have to admit, in other areas of my life, faced with a comparable situation, I have just plunged blindly on; you never know which partner might make y...
Opening Record Store
Music stores, book stores closing everywhere. What are you planning to do that escaped the attention of everyone else? All you know about this place is that the previous owner couldn’t make the business work, despite what he claims is "steady cust...
Looking for a good system for my apartment. Any advise?
Seems to me you want amp/pre/radio/cd/tt/speakers.  And you want a system that (1) sounds good. (2) is of interest (in some way) to audiophiles.  Now lots of us have systems under 5K that sound fantastic.  But to get what you want on point 2, you'...
