Where is the weakest link?
I think speaker cables can have the most influence on the sound of the system. Speakers are a very complex load with impedance that varies considerably over the frequency range. A quality speaker cable that is a good match with your system can mak...
Would you buy a piece of gear with a defect?
If it’s only one input that is not working, it's probably a bad relay or broken wire, and fairly inexpensive to fix. If the preamp will work for you without that input, then it’s a great preamp for the price. You might be able to get another coupl...
Heat from amps?
The X250.8 is a class AB amp with a fair amount of bias current. The idle power dissipation is 450w. With higher efficiency speakers, you probably will be in class A bias most of the time, so power dissipation isn't going to be that much higher th...
XLR cables, worth buying higher end?
AES48 dictates which pins are used for what, how shields are used, and how grounding is connected, and assumes a fully balanced source signal and differential or transformer-coupled input. All good things for sure, and critical for achieving the c...
XLR cables, worth buying higher end?
I have tried a number of balanced cables and every one sounds a bit different, particularly for longer runs. I have 25ft cables between my preamp and monoblock power amps, and the difference between cables is more noticeable. I have found that wit...
Has Anybody Else Heard These?
I have a pair of Totem Mani-2 stand-mount monitors which I have owned for many years. Totem seems to know how to extract pretty amazing bass out of a small enclosure. My little Mani-2s play down to 30Hz with authority. Downside is that they suck p...
Why Do So Many Audiophiles Reject Blind Testing Of Audio Components?
The only changes in my system that I've been able to detect "instantly" are changes in volume (of at least 1/2 db) and fairly significant changes in tone. But my system is good enough at this point that it's pretty rare I introduce something new t...
Cables, just as important as a hi end component?
The DH Labs BL-1 interconnect is not pure silver. It is silver coated stranded copper. I've been pretty impressed with DH Labs cables, but if your goal is pure silver, this doesn't quite get you there.
GR Research Power Cables
@nicktheknife - Given the price of these cables, I wouldn't expect them to have high-end connectors. But Danny is pretty responsive to email so you could ask him. He may even be willing to build these with higher-priced connectors (Furutech, etc.)...

@rnrmf1971 - Perfect. Thanks for the additional info. These sound like they'd be a good choice for me.

@rnrmf1971 - thanks. I assume these are connected to your amp. Could you share what amp you're using and what you're driving it with? I've got a number of amps, but currently using a pair of Pass XA60.8s driven by a DIY preamp.
DIY Speakers
I'll add my vote for GR-Research and Madisound. GR has kits that deliver pretty amazing performance with high quality parts, starting at a few hundred dollars. I've lived with the NX-Oticas for about 16mo now, and I've very impressed with the over...
Krell FPB 300
I had my FPB300 (purchased around 1996) recapped in 2009. It started to fail again in 2018, but the first several years after recapping it sat in a box unused. After checking the cost to get it fixed again, I decided to trade it in. I kind of regr...
By far, my most significant system upgrade!
Is it really the case that the two conductors that make up the speaker cable are completely separate? That is pretty wacky given the inductance problems pointed out. I've usually got an open mind about what will provide a positive benefit to an au...

I'm thinking of giving the Iconoclast cables a try between my preamp and monoblocks. I need approximately 25ft XLRs, so these won't be inexpensive (at least using 4x4 with UP-OCC) at $4250. I'm currently using Neotech NEI-3001 Mk III. At this pric...
