Cables, just as important as a hi end component? The DH Labs BL-1 interconnect is not pure silver. It is silver coated stranded copper. I've been pretty impressed with DH Labs cables, but if your goal is pure silver, this doesn't quite get you there.
GR Research Power Cables @nicktheknife - Given the price of these cables, I wouldn't expect them to have high-end connectors. But Danny is pretty responsive to email so you could ask him. He may even be willing to build these with higher-priced connectors (Furutech, etc.)...
The Intellectual People Podcast - Galen Gareis (Former Belden Wire Designer) @rnrmf1971 - Perfect. Thanks for the additional info. These sound like they'd be a good choice for me.
The Intellectual People Podcast - Galen Gareis (Former Belden Wire Designer) @rnrmf1971 - thanks. I assume these are connected to your amp. Could you share what amp you're using and what you're driving it with? I've got a number of amps, but currently using a pair of Pass XA60.8s driven by a DIY preamp.
DIY Speakers I'll add my vote for GR-Research and Madisound. GR has kits that deliver pretty amazing performance with high quality parts, starting at a few hundred dollars. I've lived with the NX-Oticas for about 16mo now, and I've very impressed with the over...
Krell FPB 300 I had my FPB300 (purchased around 1996) recapped in 2009. It started to fail again in 2018, but the first several years after recapping it sat in a box unused. After checking the cost to get it fixed again, I decided to trade it in. I kind of regr...
By far, my most significant system upgrade! Is it really the case that the two conductors that make up the speaker cable are completely separate? That is pretty wacky given the inductance problems pointed out. I've usually got an open mind about what will provide a positive benefit to an au...
The Intellectual People Podcast - Galen Gareis (Former Belden Wire Designer) I'm thinking of giving the Iconoclast cables a try between my preamp and monoblocks. I need approximately 25ft XLRs, so these won't be inexpensive (at least using 4x4 with UP-OCC) at $4250. I'm currently using Neotech NEI-3001 Mk III. At this pric...
All things being equal (hypothetical) which do you prefer, XLR or RCA? Assuming your equipment is taking advantage of the balanced connections, then this is the clear winner in my book. RCA cables carry the signal on the same connection as the ground currents between devices which is a bad idea. If all your gear is w...
Why not more popular? I remember the DQ10 fondly, although I agree that the bass was their weakness. I haven't heard other full-range open baffle designs besides the ones I currently own. But I can say that the bass is definitely not a weakness in these speakers. I thi...
Why not more popular? @tomcy6 - Clearly not just DIY. There are a few well regarded brands. But this is a tiny fraction of the number of box speaker brands, and most audio stores don't carry any. In fact, most audiophiles that I have talked to have never heard an open ...
Why not more popular? @bdp24 - thanks for adding all the detail. Danny's OB subwoofers are also used by GT Audio Works to great effect. These systems have received considerable praise at various audio shows over the past few years. The company that Danny worked most cl...
Why not more popular? @mijostyn - I think an H-frame or W-frame design works a lot better for open baffle since it keeps the baffle size very small (barely bigger than the driver). My cabinets hardly vibrate at all (less than the sealed Velodyne subs I use in my home t...
Are Preamplifier’s Relevant Today or just a Hinderance with Digital Playback ? I think if I had a DAC with an integral passive volume control with a remote and low-impedance balanced outputs, I'd might be happy without a preamp. But all the DACs I've owned have not had a volume control (other than digital scaling pre-DAC), h...
Why not more popular? I have open baffle subwoofers that sound fantastic in my room. They seem to have way fewer problems exciting room nodes than conventional sealed or ported box designs. Probably similar to what can be accomplished with a swarm, but without "pressur... |
