Question for those who know about open baffle speakers...
I have not heard open baffle speakers that use a concentric done driver like this, but I I would share your concern. They could sound very good though. I have heard speakers that were partially open baffle but used a horn upper-mid-range/tweeter t...
Questions to Denafrips Terminator Plus owners (the break-in)
I didn't find the T+ overly rough sounding right out of the box, but it definitely improves with time. It took several weeks of 24/7 operation before I thought it sounded better than the Terminator it replaced. My system is on the warm side though...
Recommended streamers/servers?
As @tk21 mentioned, adding the Bridge II to your DS Dac might be the best option. This is made specifically for your DAC and is probably the best value option. If you are looking for something that will work with other DACs, the BlueSound Node 2i ...
Electra Tube Connectors and GR Research Speaker Update Kits
I'm using tube connectors on my GR-Research speakers. I've also used them on a few of my DIY amplifiers in addition to traditional binding posts. I can't say that I've heard any significant improvement comparing tube connectors to high quality bin...
How important is the pre-amp?
As others have said, it is very dependent on the rest of your system. But unless you have a single high-level source with an excellent built in volume control (such as @mikelavigne 's MSB DAC), a good preamp can make a significant different to the...
Helping a kid out
Great thread and kudos to the OP for helping a youngster appreciate our hobby. The Bottlehead kit is a great idea. Building something yourself gives you a much better appreciation of how stuff works and what matters in the product. Who knows - it ...
More Roon Questions
The 2TB SSD drive is used to store music files. If you are not going to download music or RIP your CD collection, there is no need for this drive. You will want to have a drive to store backups of your Roon database, but you can get a DropBox subs...
Going monoblock?
So you think that monoblock amps with a 750 VA transformer and 80,000 uf of capacitance in each amp will perform better than a stereo amp with a 5,000 VA transformer and 260,000 uf of capacitance. That's hard to say. If it's actually a single se...
Terminator plus vs Holo Audio may KTE
I have the Terminator Plus with Gaia and like it a lot, but one thing you should consider is that the T+ has a higher than average output impedance since it drives the output directly from the resistor array and doesn't have an output buffer. If y...
High-pass line filter to relieve main speakers from low frequency
I am doing just what you describe in my strength to roll of the bottom end below about 65Hz. I am using a Pair of Miflex KPCU caps for each channel (balanced connections).I think the improvement in sound quality is pretty subtle, but it does seem ...
Combined Streamer/DAC/Preamp
I found a used Auralic Vega G2 for a good price so decided to go with this unit. This had all the features I was looking for in a nicely styled package and has excellent reviews. Also, Auralic's North American offices are only 20 minutes away w...
Combined Streamer/DAC/Preamp
@mahler123 - while the Node2i is a nice unit for the price, I'm not satisfied with the sound quality and it doesn't have balanced outputs which I would like. @ipd_dk2 - the Matrix Audio units look interesting, particularly for the price. Do you kn...
Long hiatus from audio, getting back into it, speaker/room help please
I'll add my vote to look at GR-Research speakers. Danny often knows of customers that are trading up and have already-built speakers available for sale. There are also a number of folks that will build them for you if you don't want to try to tack...
Long hiatus from audio, getting back into it, speaker/room help please
Maggies are nice speakers (I've owned a number of models over the years), but that's a pretty big room you are trying to fill. I'd consider finding a user pair of 3.5s or 3.6s. I agree with the above posters that the BlueSound Node would be a grea...
Any experience with PS Audio Power Plants
I'm using the Stellar Power Plant 3 for all my front end gear - not my power amps (Pass XA60.8). I've had it for a couple years and it has been completely reliable. It finely improved sound quality during daytime hours. Less difference at night.
