Cambridge CXC > Audiolab 6000CDT > Jay's Audio CDT2-MK2! Sighted bias especially with the expectation of hearing an improvement! Try blind listening in a dark room. Otherwise it's an anecdotal blurb for the mfgr's web site!
New CD Player @thyname : no need to throw shade! My Marantz CD67 died recently. I will buy and install a new laser. I have not yet unpacked the Samsung DVD HD841. Anyway, I have several more working CD and DVD players on hand. I actually do have way too much tu...
Weak Link in Vinyl Playback The OP could try to find on the used marketplace a SpectroAcoustics preamp. Then get rid of the iFi and Schiit. One could probably be found for around $200 on, say, USAM.
Weak Link in Vinyl Playback @oldrooney : back in 1977 SpectroAcoustics in Oregon sold a preamp with full capacitive and resistive loadings by switches on the front panel. I had one briefly and stupidly sold it! For MM cartridges this would be very useful!
Weak Link in Vinyl Playback @oldrooney : that's the first I've ever heard about a particular cartridge being specified for use in an S-shaped arm! Straight or curved all that matters is the proper offset angle at the headshell! Not enough offset angle means the cartridge wil...
Sound and music A music score is only a template for the music. A human performer has to connect the notes so the essence that the composer wrote into the notes may be freed!
Audio Research REF 750 pre July 4 FIRE WORKS. TUBE ARC. 24 KT150's per amp! Yikes! Bet your electric bill will be going up!
Weak Link in Vinyl Playback The Hana EL (Elliptical Low output) MC is an easy recommendation at $500. A Denon 103R at $340 is another option.
Weak Link in Vinyl Playback @mattmiller : the OP is using an iFiZen phono stage into the Schiit line stage. He was using the Schiit in the passive mode (no gain). That way usually results in a lackluster sound. The same applies to the AT MM cartridge. I find MM cartridges wi...
Weak Link in Vinyl Playback The OP should always run the Saga in active mode. Passive (no gain) modes in preamps tend to have a dull, lackluster sound. Next, the AT cartridge has high coil inductance. This makes it really susceptible to capacitance loading. I recommend chang...
300w tube amp monos - which one? Buy a secondhand pair of McIntosh 275's and parallel the outputs of each amp. This will give you 150 watts per side - only a 3db difference from 300 watts!
Can VTL 2.5 do MC cartridge? Even with an added tube to get gain up to around 60db+ there will still be noise inherent from tubes. A better solution is to use an SUT (Step Up Transformer). These add zero noise to a MM stage but handle the current-to-voltage conversion needed ...
Know anything about Bruce Moore preamps? I owned and stupidly sold the Precision Fidelity C7 phono preamp. An excellent Bruce Moore design!
I'm thinking about a low watt tube amplifier? I'd stick with the Cayin and Luxman amps. Adequate power - and plenty of tube "magic" - contrary to what some claim! Plus enough in reserve to handle music peaks on your 87db speakers!
What amp to pair with a Hafler DH-110 Preamp? How about a nicely restored Hafler 220 amp? Plenty of power and quite transparent sounding too! BTW, I have the 110/220 pair in my collection! Plus the Snell E's! |
