Things that make you go, "Hmmmmm...."
Surprisingly, the Sony SCD 1 is still selling used at more than half its price when new. Looks good and built like a tank. Of course, it plays SACDs also -- does that disqualify it as a "CD player"?What about the Oppos? They do play CDs, but they ...
what's a good fm tuner?
Yeah, the MR78 is a honey. I sent mine to Audio Classics for a Modafferi Mod some years ago. Updated, clean, and solid, but not cheap.I also have an MD Etude. Musical, and I like the meters and digital readout. Very cool.Unless you live far from t...
Your reference for "the absolute" sound?
Using live performances as a reference involves evaluating the entire process from microphones to recording equipment to engineering choices to media encoding to my own playback system.I have no choice but to trust that the engineers had an accura...
Tonearm/Cartridge Combinations: What Do You Own (Or Have Owned) And Recommend?
Good results with a Koetsu Rosewood Signature on a Graham Phantom (original) tonearm. Mounted on a VPI TNT HRX (older version). Graham silver phono IC to Manley Steelhead and AQ AT Amazon silver ICs into Pass preamp and amps.
Am I asking for too much??
JGH was a credible curmudgeon in early Stereophile.  I used to envy his ability to get top notch stuff to put in his listening room. What a racket, eh?Nowadays reviews are expanded ads. I read them for basic product description and sometimes indus...
Any Love For Bryston Here?
I’m using 3 Bryston 7B ST’s for the front speakers in my AV system. They are more than 20 years old, and I have never had any problem with them.I like their power reserves; they handle difficult loads well, especially in the high current mode sett...
Carver, THE standard of excellence IMO
I am using 2 Carver M500t stereo amps built in the 1980s and I have bought 4 Sunfire subwoofers.None of these has caught fire.
Anyone use auto lifters? Opinions
Yes, adding the velcro strip was one of the modifications I made.
Anyone use auto lifters? Opinions
I've been using a modified Expressimo The Lift.  Does the job, although it makes a little clunk as it contacts the tonearm.  I like that it has no springs, just a weight.  As with most others, correct placement is important.
Vintage automatic turntable recommendations?
I have an old Dual 1019 that has worked well through the years. Very well made for the time. The 1219 and later Duals had 12 inch platters.I recently gave away a Benjamin Miracord 50H with push button controls. Sweet.Too old for you?
What were some of your early Hi-End audio gear/influences?
Two big steps for me.In high school I got a Fisher 105 compact FM/phono 3 piece system and it totally blew away my parents’ Magnavox console.Almost 30 years later, I replaced my aging Rectilinear III Highboys with a pair of Thiel 3.6s. The quantum...
Again the topic of weight of amps
I got a Carver M500t, 251 watts per channel x 2, at 23 lbs, produced in the mid 1980s  Nice musical sound.  I like the big meters.
Any cable delivers more bass than Cardas Golden Reference?
Get an extra long run of a cheap cable.  The longer the cable, the more will high frequencies be attenuated.  When you turn up the volume to hear the highs, your bass will be boosted.
Any cable delivers more bass than Cardas Golden Reference?
I wonder about the flip side of the question -- what cable does not carry high frequencies so well?  So when you turn up the volume to hear the highs, the bass gets louder.Which electrical characteristics of cables tend to inhibit the highs?
what is it in audio that you dislike most?
16 years ago, I bought a turntable, arm, and cartridge rig from a well-known retailer and I paid the high end price.A month or so later, the retailer called me and said he had to ask me for another $2000. There must have been some miscalculation.I...
