Need advice: repair CAL CL25--or buy new/used CDP? I don't believe that California Audio Labs has an extensive network of authorized service centers. I had to send my CL10 to their Arizona service site (it used to be in Blue Lake, CA), via UPS. They are now a subsidiary of Sensory Science which is...
Thiels and Tubes I have a pair of 3.6's. The impedence dips down to between 2 and 3 ohms at certain frequencies. I recommend that you stay with a (good) solid state amp. You don't need to get tubes to make the Thiels sound good.
I've become a Steely Dan junky . . . . . Steely Dan's first album said it all for my audiophilia: Can't Buy a Thrill. Every time I upgrade, I somehow feel compelled to Do It Again!Buncha groups in the same genre. I agree with the Doobies. Try also Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Atlanta Rhythm ...
Do cables really need "breaking in"? It is possible to argue that the properties of the dielectric change with increased use. I don't know whether this is audible. Given that audiophiles can hear the difference between different cables, it isn't inconceivable that break in could be a...
Help/Major Problem You may have somehow triggered the thermals on the Aleph 3. Since it's class A, you no doubt have noted that it always runs hot. This may have inhibited a thermal reset. Try turning it off, letting it cool, then trying again. Good luck!

Meridian 508.24 or Levinson 39 ? You may be interested to know that the Levinson 39 has been replaced by the Levinson 390s, which I consider to be an indentifiably better-sounding player. The Levinson site has a detailed product description. Unfortunately, it is expensive and so ...
Sony SACD-1 vs ML39..Which is best overall? They're both very good, and you have to be pretty golden eared for the difference to be meaningful to you. The ML39 gives a good, honest presentation with a flat frequency response, decent dynamics, and good detail. In comparison, the SCD1 sounds ...
Suggestions to replace amp for Proac 1SCs I have successfully driven the 1sc's with a Pass Aleph 3 basic. The Pass is 30 watts per channel, class A architecture. I never ran out of power, and the Pass had a very smooth presentation, especially in the midrange. It is the most tube-like sol...
Bryston or Classe Bryston has a punchier house sound. Classe's is more delicate. You seem to like hearing the details, which would suggest the Classe. However, a Bryston preamp might provide some synergistic benefits paired with your 4Bst. Also, you may lose much o... |
