vpi phono cables They are very good cables. The cables are made by a well known cable maufacturer and tailored for the VPI table and tonearm wire. I use the Cardas Neutral Reference only because that is what I already had. But for less money, the VPI cable is as g...
Poor man's reference DAC I would consider jsut getting the new Sony SACD reference CD player and abandoning separates or the new Arcam FMJ CD 33 which reviewers seem to rave about. Jallen
Audio's Most Enduring Products. VPI Aries, HW 19 series, Rowland Concentra, Krell KSA 250, FPB 300, Thiel CS 5i, ML CLS IIZ, Maggie 3.5/3.6, Vandersteen 2 series (affordable good sound) Macintosh 275 amps, Quicksilver silver monos, Basis tables. Jallen
Setting up RB 300? You will need a Jig to set things up properly and set the cartridge in alignment. The Dennison Soundtracker is good. VPI has a good one for their tables. Without a jig, there is no way to get it set very well. Jallen
Do Cartridges just fail? I agree that the cartridge is the place to look...the leads that is. The small little leads do become loose to the point that they will not make contact. Use a tester to verify contact through the path. The cartridge usually will degrade with mist...
I'm cable-clueless and need advice... I always find myself going to Cardas for a clean sound. If I want warm I will use the Cross or 300B Microtwin for an inexpensive good sound. For a neutral sound, then the Neutral Reference. With balanced cables, you will find there is less differe...
Bryston 4B-SST and Audio Research SP-16 ARC preamps and Bryston amps have a long standing synergy and are indeed very musical. The amp-speaker match is the biggest synergy factor however. Also, avoid silver interconnects with the ARC. Not always a good match. I have heard some that work...
$4000 to spend on a SS power amp - help me choose I went from tubes to Rowland gear and have not gone back. Jallen
What is the amp for magnepan's: tube or solid? I recently heard the 3.5 with the Rowland Concentra II and they sounded marvelous. We also listened to the EAR 509 100wpc tube amps which were not quite as tight in the bass but very similar in many ways. The maggies need at least 100wpc to come a...
VPI Aries Questions I have the Aries/10.0 and Shure V15 type VxMR and this combination is exceptionally satisfying. I use the AR HT 130 for the phono cable and this is a good match. The Cardas Neutral Reference is also good as is the VPI cable. The SDS is gravey. Get...
CES 2004 Best of Show I too liked the Halcro/Wilson room. Although some of the recordings had voices comming from behind us, most of the multi-channel recordings were good. The system was in a great room which helped a lot. I also liked the Ascendant speaker by Avalon....
Amp question... Forte 4a or B&K ST140 I have owned both and the Forte 1a is better in every way. If it does not have replacement parts available then the equation changes. I would consider more powerful B&k amps and the Bryston amps like the 4BNRB or 3BST. Jallen
Upgrade turntable or preamp next? Upgrade the turntable and arm first with a good cartridge. The VPI Aries is a good choice. I have the Aries and 10.0 with Shure V15vxMR and no complaints. There are better cartridges than my Shure, like the Sumiko Blackbird and others at 600-800.0...
Speaker cables for Thiel 2.3's and Bryston 4BST? I had great results with Cardas Neutral Reference. In comparison, the Hrmonic Pro 9 was bloomier, slower and not as open in the top end. The Cardas Golden Reference was also good. The Straight wire Maestro was great, but a littler soft on the bass... |
