Bryston 7bsst vs 28bsst?
There are those who feel that you can never have too much power, especially with a maggie. At the CES, magnepan has used 4 7BSST in biamp mode, or one 28. They should know, and a big room would make it appropriate. The character is the same, but t...
Why power cable effect overall syste sound?
I think one of the main points missing here is not that cords and cables make no difference, but that people are preoccupied with them and forget room treatment which I find to be far more important, as I think speaker cables are more important, a...
Stick with Aerial 20T to play above 100Hz? Or MBL?
You need more room damping, you are getting a midbass bump which will likely be with most speakers putting out anything significant below 100 cycles. I have heard the MBL 111, and they are very nice, but sound flat if only playing at a modest leve...
Bryston 7bsst vs 28bsst?
My setup is a variety of options. I have both 3.6 and 1.6. I use the 4BST in the bass and a tube amp for the midtreble on the 3.6. I use either Quicksilver Silver monos or an Eicho HF 89 Modified to put out 70wpc and modded with v-caps, and everyt...
Why power cable effect overall syste sound?
The benefit of power cables is far overrated. The benefit depends on RF EMI contamination present. They can reduce noise, but when people start claiming huge improvements in sound, etc., I get a little skeptical. Use a cable of 10-12ga, and this s...
Bryston 7bsst vs 28bsst?
HP sure likes them. Try them first. If the speakers are very inefficient, then they may help. Remember that you only gain 3dB when you double the power though. Jallen
What is the most analog sounding CD player under $
The Meridian is hard to beat for the money and performance. Can be a bit tempermental with reading discs sometimes.
What amp would you suggest for Magnepan MG12s
Try a Bryston amp like the 4BSST or later generation. The 3BSST may be enough for this smaller speaker in a small room. They Bryston is magical on the Magggie speakers. I have both the 3.6 and 1.6, Bryston is great. The Quicksilver Silver monos ar...
Anyone auditioned the Cardas Clear? I have....
I auditioned them through two high rez systems, and came to similar conclusions. One system was based on the Avalon Eidolon speakers, the other on Magnepan 3.6 speakers in a bi-amp and then in stereo amp configuration. The "Clear" is very good. Is...
12ax7's to roll
The "Best" all depends on the circuit it is being used in. I like the Amperex "60's" version best, but also like Telefunkens, but some are a bit bright, the Mullards are very warm, but good for many circuits. Those are the big 3 at the top of the ...
CES in Las Vegas
Go early, walk fast, avoid the temptation to see the adult entertainment show next to the CES.....and don't think we weren't aware you knew that. Another 100-150.00 admission price....so I hear......Explain that one to your wife....mine wasn't con...
Cap voltage
The more voltage tolerance, the better. Too close and the cap will overheat and may blow. Heat is the enemy of the cap and you need a little padding. 800v is better than 600, etc. The REL and Jantzen along with the Mundhorf offer good voltage tole...
Best Amp with Magnepan 3.6's
The tube preamps I have used were the Music Reference RM 5 MKIII, the ARC LS15, 16, 25, Quicksilver linestage, and Full Function. I like the MR RM5 MKIII, and the Quicksilvers. The Quicksilver linestage is unbeievable for the money. I use the Full...
Best Amp with Magnepan 3.6's
I had the 1080 with my 3.6 and it is a good amp, just a bit of grain in the treble. To go forward, get a Bryston 4BSST, not 4BST. This gives a very pure delicate treble, great bass control, and if you want more muscle in the bass, get the 14BSST i...
tube amp on with speaker wire disconnected
There are more problems if there is a signal into it. jallen
