When does analog compete with digital? It should read "When does digital compete with analog" as digital is an imitation of the real thing with the exception of some of the newer 24/192 and other high rez digital which is just wonderful if done right..... I usually find I have to spend...
Experienced audiophiles best speaker OK, here is a stab at the question. One of the best I have heard recently is the Sonus Faber Cremona M driven with MAC gear, 2300 preamp, etc. Just a delicious speaker. Only average in the bass, but good for the woof size, but the musicality of th...
What do bad caps sound like? Depends where they are and how "bad" they are. Jallen
Joe Bonamassa Any suggestion's? He definitely "ROCKS" and the concert at the Royal Albert Hall is great.
disappointing VPI 16.5 performance?? Be sure to clean the felt brush on the suction wand. Also, there are some records that are just too damaged, and not in a "dirty surface" state so much as a damaged beyond repair state. When that is the case, get another record. Not all records ar...
Phono preamp selection Add the Marchand to your list. Jallen
Balanced vs Unbalanced? Use balanced if noise is a problem. The XLR is a beetter connection, but requires more circuitry, thus sonically the circuit is beetter with RCA provided the RCA make good connections. Remember, Sheffield lab used coax cable that went from Wiley C...
Fast/Slow fuse? JEA48 is correct about the inrush current. Some manufacturers insist on blasting the current in, and the risk of blowing fuses is far greater. A good 30-45 second bleed of power in the circuit is far easier on the system, and fuses, but few do tha...
Bryston 4B ST Replacement The SST is way ahead of the ST series which were far toop crisp in the vocals, and dry. They SST is not perfect, but warmer, and more musical. It would definietly be an upgrade, and the new SST2 a bit more texture in the mids. Pass are also great ...
Does SS cost more than HS for superior sound? Buying either SS or tubes in and of themselves will have no guarantees. Not all tube designs are good as not all SS designs are good. They have to match with the speaker. Generally tubes are more musical IMHO, but not always. Try first and be open...
When is an amp ‘just too old? ’ To buy? I would not buy a 10 year old amp from anyone but Bryston as the warranty covers your arse if there is a transistor meltdown. Some well known names cost as much to repair as they sell for used. Then what do you have?? An amp which is worth half of...
do monitors require a subwoofer? Monitor requirement is monitor dependent and your taste for bass. If you want a cheap high quality sub, get the James EMB1000, usually for 5-700.00 on the gon. They are small, easy to adjust, and are very fast. Sorry to hear about the divorce, bee...
The Next Step - what would you do? More information needed. How large is your room, how well damped is it, how far from the back wall can you have speakers, and how loud do you listen to music? There are a lot of choices you have besides the girlfriend (which would clearly be more ...
Andreas Vollenweider? I saw him live at the Greek in Berkeley, and it was unforgettable, and I have since seen no better concert. Jallen
Bryston Help The 4BST is too crisp and "s" emphasis and the 4BSST is much better. The preamp problem is more likely the amp, not the preamp. I would try the Quicksilver preamp as it mates well with Bryston. Jallen |
