clio09, thank you, appreciate it.If that Otari is as good as it looks, the price is right. You don't save $1k when you go with higher end R2R deck. Technics transport is smoother than Otari ? Are you sure, that's unexpected ?
Albert Porter
Albert, what speakers do you like ? I know you have JM Labs Grand Utopia. Besides it.
Convo on SS mixed with VAC and in what order?
The orthodox answer is quite different. It is either tube, both preamp and power amp, or transistor. Tube preamp/transistor power amp does work well in many cases - depends on your speakers and taste.Blanket statement like solid state amps will dr...

johnss, do you know who can be trusted with decks to service them and make necessary upgrades ? Studer and Otari. I would see no reason to go with Technics. Maybe pro Sony and top Revox too.
Is there an affordable long run XLR preamp to amp cable out there?
If my recollection is correct, Chesky Audio used to use Nirvana top model cables. And those few Chesky cds that I have do sound quite good. Those primitive pro cables, among other things, do not deal with the matter of vibration caused by the prop...
Is there an affordable long run XLR preamp to amp cable out there?
Van den Hull. That's what Pink Floyd used when they finally figured out that cables mattered. Don't know what model.Atma-Sphere and BAT opinions are of little value unless you use their equipment. But if you decide to try a pro cable also give DiMa...
I need bass
We need more details. Source, amp, cables, power cords, room size, preferred sound signature and taste of music. Also, how loud you usually listen to.Room acoustics is always very important, of course. If you decide to go with subs, yes, two subs ...
How many are serious headphone users?
I might get Grado battery powered amp for analog and Burson for digital, or two Bursons.
How many are serious headphone users?
Just got Grado RS-1 Classic buttonless, as new, bought on ebay from Europe. By audiophile standards I never seriously listen to headphones because I don't use external amp. Yet. I listen to a lot of music on youtube and sometimes Nakamichi cassett...
Ugrade-itis - is there a cure?
There is no cure I am aware of, nor should there be. When you are done you are already "six feet under", in a manner of speaking. As for the expenses, many other things are just as or more expensive. The trick is to be able to keep it under control...
Should an amp have a "personality"?
Speaking of personalities.. Come one, people, let it go whatever it is.
Should an amp have a "personality"?
I would think that Thiel and Pass would be a match made in hell, by the way, they have nothing in common. But this is more a theoretical discussion.

Ralph, you keep self-advertising, and that's that. That piece of s... Technics with Grado is nothing really, DJ toy at best.
Should an amp have a "personality"?
roxy54, "subtractive coloration" is a great term. I think, this kind of coloration is virtually missed in all discussions, amplifiers or not. And within reason subtractive colorations are worse for me than added colorations.
referencing vs plug & play
Yes, Michael, your Rev80 speakers are very sensitive to everything, and that's a good thing. Don't know about Koss, I only voice guitars. Final touch in voicing - you read aloud particular lines from Classical Persian poetry in a particular way, d...
