A "golden warm" audio memory
@secretguy I was a nomadic airline mechanic (prior to post 9/11) and the Pittsburgh area was where I ran out of energy (in ’91) and my travels ceased. The springs and the falls can be wonderful here. On edit:  I picked up that Cary preamp in t...
“Faithful to the recording”
@tylermunns when I hear what I, personally, would describe as "flabby" bass, the sound I hear makes me think of woofers that have come loose and are just slopping around. We come back to the subjective versus objective descriptors. Not to way lon...
5AR4 rectifier tube question
Thank you to all for suggestions and information.  I have made some notes and I put some 5AR4s on my ebay watch list so that I can find them easier if I decide to pull the trigger.  I also went back to upscale audio and I clicked on a 5AR4 to rad ...
“Faithful to the recording”
@stuartk  I guess what I typed was inaccurate.  Within the last couple of years I did buy two new pieces, a SA10 and a SLP05, and I did read a couple of reviews for both of them.  However, after my last prescription to Stereophile expired over 20 ...
“Faithful to the recording”
@stuartk  maybe that's why I seldom read a review anymore, except to sometimes get specs and prices of something I find interesting.
5AR4 rectifier tube question
@russ69 oops, I forgot about the whole tube hoarding thing. And I wasn’t even thinking about it along those lines; ever since I bought that pre I’ve been considering tube upgrades and a spare rectifier in case the stock one takes a crap, so I wou...
“Faithful to the recording”
I don't necessarily hate them, but a lot of the descriptive terms  become subjective when used to describe sonic qualities.  So they may not mean the same to me as they do to the writer.
“Faithful to the recording”
LOL!  There was a point in my career as a wanna-be-audiophile where that's what I was striving to hear:  "faithful to the recording."  But who knows what that even means?  Often, different sections of the final mix are recorded at different places...
Upgraded McCormack DNA-1 or Dennis Had Inspire SEP?
@isaacc7   thanks.
Cary Audio SLP-05 First Impression
and no way should the consumer bear additional costs to rectify a manufacture defect. @testpilot  I totally agree with that.
Cary Audio SLP-05 First Impression
@decooney  don't get me wrong--I think my SLP05 is a great sounding unit and it certainly is a sexy unit. The thread that I was thinking about involved an issue with a Cary product (and I don't remember which one for certain) that went back &...
Cary Audio SLP-05 First Impression
@decooney  if that is the same thread I remember reading, that certainly was not a ringing endorsement for Cary Audio.  As a relatively new SLP05 owner, that made me shudder and also made me think, "Gee, I hope I never have to send mine back."
Intergrated Amp suggestions for B&W 805d4
What wattage is considered high, how do find this out as it’s not spelled out in the specs most of the time?  Cheers Since all watts are not created equal, I was hoping to read some opinions related to this subject.
Cary Audio SLP-05 First Impression
The fact that the current was at 30 mA, and not the normal 60+ mA seems to suggest to me that the tubes are not drawing enough current, and are possibly malfunctioned.  Then again, what do I know. or, I was thinking, something wrong and not pro...
Cary Audio SLP-05 First Impression
. . . so pressing on with my musings on this, I believe that it is the rectifier’s function to convert the AC out of the wall into the DC current that goes through the preamp tubes. So I would think that there must be an issue in that function of ...
