HoloAudio STREAMER is out now
@lalitk Because I have a $750 sunk into a Node 2i with an upgraded external LPS and I want to avoid a lateral move without some evidence. They take 6 weeks to build and are not returnable. So, without some additional data about whether they punch ...
Fantasy or reality? Inexpensive solid state preamps that get you 80% there?
Thanks for the additional suggestions, especially the Threshold, which sounds interesting. @avanti1960 your SLP-05 sounds lovely, but I have a tube preamp I like. Does Cary make an SLP in solid state, too? You keep telling me about tube preamps, b...

@charles1dad Thank you -- that clarification helped a lot. I wrote to Hans via his Patreon channel asking him to review the unit. We need some professional assessments, for sure.

@panerai557  I have an enviable system. It does much of what I want. This thread is about getting a SS preamp that can serve in a subsidiary way, some of the time. @mrdecibel  Why not go passive? Because I tried it with an exceptional passive aut...
HoloAudio STREAMER is out now
@lalitk I didn't have control over the streamer and was mainly listening. It was operated using Roon. I think a longer, more in depth review by a professional is needed. One thing I suspect is happening is that the streamer is entering a more ma...

@charles1dad When I say it was "amazing" I am choosing that word carefully. That's how it sounded to me and to the experienced audiophile with whom I listened. In addition to building audio equipment (including amps, preamps, speakers, and his Int...
Revel vs the field
I have heard the Focal 906 and had the Focal towers in my room for about 2 weeks. I compared them against Fritz Heiler’s Carbon 7 Mk 2 SE and they were not nearly as musical, though the towers threw out a much wider sound stage (because they’re to...

@kennyc As I indicated in a number of my responses in this thread, I'm open to new or used. See comments below about some of the better used options people have mentioned. I'm interested to hear your views!

Aesthetix Calypso  -- is $6k. Not $1k. But you like it -- I get it.

Did some listening with very nice DIY preamp. Tonalities sounded great, less warm but not sterile; music had a presence but not that same kind of intimacy from tubes. A different kind of intimacy -- an immediacy, more like it. Soundstage depth was...
Streamers?
I heard a Holo Audio streamer today at a seasoned audiophile's house. 30 years plus. He said that he paid about $800 for this and cannot figure out why anyone would pay more. It's a giant killer.

I listened to the Holo Audio streamer today and it was amazing. It is quite nicely made and heavy, too. It was delightful sounding. Went through a Bent TapX preamp into some Coincident tube amps. Wow.

I'm borrowing a DIY unit from a friend. He writes, "It's built with old Burson buffer modules, only has about 3db of gain, a Jos Van Eindhoven relay stepped attenuator with unobtainium low noise Vishay resistors and a overkill linear power supply....

@russbutton Great ideas! Thanks. Vintage may be the ticket. I just looked up the Bryston and Hafler and Apt Holman and the reviews are over the moon. What's not clear is what kind of love/repair these might need but thank you for an interesting ne...
