What qualities stand out in really good solid state preamps?
@audphile1 What attributes do you look for in a good solid state preamp? for me it is the following - tone - must be natural dynamic range - must be able to sound laid back and gentle but scale up to explosive forces fast, as fast as deman...
What qualities stand out in really good solid state preamps?
@curiousjim I'm not against hybrid preamps. The point of this thread is different. It's meant to ferret out criteria.
What qualities stand out in really good solid state preamps?
@jc4659 "2-dimensional versus 3-dimensional images" -- well said. Good info about the the different Ayre models. @yyzsantabarbara  "My goal is to let the preamp produce the sound of the amp, source, and cables without adding to the mix" -- that c...
What qualities stand out in really good solid state preamps?
@yyzsantabarbara  I want my SS preamp to not add anything to the sound.  So there is nothing beyond tonality -- the only difference is warmth or tubiness vs. neutral/non-additive -- which matters for you? If noise or quietness is the only fact...

Started with $1k speakers … what now?
@lanx0003 : While both Nemo and Dave mentioned that the bass from the Carbon is tight and agile, focusing more on quality than quantity, some users have commented that the bass may not sound as dynamic. I’m not an expert on crossover design, but ...
Herron HL-1 Preamplifier, Solid State; Herron still in business? Thoughts about sound?
Great replies!  @bpoletti calls the HL-1 "extremely transparent, neutral and has zero colorations" while @cfarrow  calls it "neutral sounding with a touch of tube warmth" -- close enough for me and very appealing. @audphile1  thanks for the Pass ...
Herron HL-1 Preamplifier, Solid State; Herron still in business? Thoughts about sound?
I wrote to him and he wrote right back. He is retired and still stands behind his products. Nice guy. @mulveling You make a good point. One might even go for something super simple, like an old Apt Holman. @soix thanks for your commentary, sugg...
How noisy is my line? Audio Prism Noise Sniffer
Brief report. Electrical Experiments using Entech Sniffer Interesting experiment:  1. Put noise sniffer into raw outlet usually occupied by my Audience Adept and rest of gear. 2. Positioned laptop next to meter with live zoom feed to my phone. 3...
Herron HL-1 Preamplifier, Solid State; Herron still in business? Thoughts about sound?
@soix I'm looking for a SS that is fairly neutral and, as it adds a bit of gain, it would be nice if the gain was slightly warm. Just a bit. I'm presently using a DIY made by a friend that is comprised, basically, of the original Burson buffer wi...

@balooo2 Great to hear! Well done! Please report back about the Carbons.
Started with $1k speakers … what now?
OP, @benanders recent post about identifying what sound you want is paramount, I think. Brand shopping is an endless chase, or can be. @balooo2 I had the Salk SS6M for a while. I had both it and the Fritz simultaneously for many months. I kept th...
Speakers to pair with Quicksilver mid mono
Mid monos are nice amps. The height off the floor is very odd. I'm down with the suggestions here. There's a FB group for Quicksilver with nice people. You might poke them, too. https://www.facebook.com/groups/975206436312742/about/
....and just when you thought you could Finally afford that pair of MBLs'.....
I would walk right into it.  "D'oh!"
