High expectations when listening to an orchestra
@frogman Of course it won’t sound like the real thing. Who would expect that it would? It’s a recording. I do, however, find it surprising that some are so willing to give up and not strive for as much realism as possible. These points seem oppose...
Your favorite OCC speaker cable
Thanks, all, for the names and your experiences. This gives me a way to expand my options. I recognize that as part of an overall circuit, the qualities emphasized or attenuated by a speaker cable are likely to change based on the other elements i...
Solid state amplifiers and sound stage, especially front to back "depth"
@niodari On the other hand, whenever positioning of each musician is regarded, in width or depth, I guess the type and quality of a particular recording is important. This is a valid point. But if one uses the same exact recording and the only c...
High expectations when listening to an orchestra
@rvpiano -- Agreed. All listening is "listening in" or "seeing as." The quest for too much realism is, for me, a sign I'm seeking a simulation (a Disney ride) rather than a meaningful engagement.
Biggest audio hoaxes
If all it takes is one person’s experience to disprove something that everyone else testifies (with evidence) is a hoax, that really opens up the marketplace! But seriously, taste is not that subjective. That’s why words like "peppery" or "bitter" ...
Speakers for the deck- okay to discuss here?
I really like these a lot: https://www.audiopro.com/en/Durable, sound good, not too expensive, easy to get now in US.You might also consider these: https://rivaaudio.com/riva-turbo-x/
How do you know if you need to add a sub (without auditioning one, I mean)?
A Loki does a nice job of boosting bass and also taming treble or bringing midrange more forward. It won't be money wasted even if you go on to get subs, and they sell pretty quickly, used, if you want to put it back out there. Low risk, medium re...
How do you know if you need to add a sub (without auditioning one, I mean)?
In response to the question below, I run my mains full range and use no room correction. As for "needing" a sub, well, I am fine with the word "need." Because it's not just about the notes down below. My room was as dialed in as it could possibly b...
Older vs. newer REL subs
@jjss49  Absolutely right. There's a tendency in discussions to set up an "either/or" when in fact the better answer is "both/and."
How do you know if you need to add a sub (without auditioning one, I mean)?
With all the speakers I auditioned before buying, I tried both with and without a sub. With some speakers -- big towers like the Focal 948 and Martin Logan ML 60 Xti, the single large driver REL sub I had didn't do all that much, not even for imag...
Older vs. newer REL subs
@missioncoonery  I love my current REL. But I have less experience and knowledge than others and the issue of integrating two subs is not just a "go and listen proposition" for me. There's more to it than that, for me. Still, I'm glad you can wrap...
Biggest audio hoaxes
@millercarbon thanks for the explanation.
Older vs. newer REL subs
@b_limo Lol! Well, I'm not sure I need to invest in fancy cabinets for a sub, especially since that will increase the weight -- and the wait! And also, if I re-sell, best not to have chosen wood that's too particular. By the way, on the servo issu...
Older vs. newer REL subs
Had a nice exchange with my speaker maker, Jim Salk. Salk had not heard the RELs and he has nothing negative to say about them. He commented to me about the differences he saw between REL at the T9x level and the Rythmik 12SE. The REL T9 lacks pha...
Has Anyone Ever Run TWO Identical Pairs of Speakers ?
Yes, vertical is much better, but you should know how complicated room acoustics get with additional drivers not built to coordinate with one another. You’re introducing a lot of extra energy into the room.Imagine for a moment that you are trying ...
