"The room can totally wreck, or make, a system"
Best $500 dollars that I ever spent was DIYing a case of 703 Owen’s-Corning rigid fiberglass panels.  Hear hear. I did that right away for my 6.5 foot ceiling. Made the room usable. I would add this. “A person’s hearing ability can totally wr...
"The room can totally wreck, or make, a system"
@baylinor Thanks for affirming. Danny's video is not the best of these sorts of things, but it's recent. He has some good ideas about how to do it on the cheap just to start out and see what difference it makes. I'm posting it because this lesson...
Power cables and power conditioners
I saw an interesting video with a top person at benchmark. He said the order of things which were most important for good sound were, from top to bottom: 1. Room 2. Speakers 3. Amp 4. Preamp, DAC 5. Cables, power. Have you got 1-4 as good as...
I should start with speakers. This I know. I’d like to establish a new system.
The $20k budget is to include speakers, integrated amp (or amp & preamp) Ah, ok. Well opinions will vary about integrated vs. separates, but I'd imagine you could get a pretty nice used speaker for 10-13k and then use the rest for a really ...

@yyzsantabarbara Good point. I wasn’t sure if he was planning to spend beyond that on other stuff. When you suggested he could get the Wotan for $2k, it made me think that it was $20k overall, not just for speakers. Otherwise, you could choose a m...

@yyzsantabarbara  A local guy to me is selling an almost new Blade 1 Meta for $18k. His ad and 2 others for under $20k are on USAM. That's great to know. I don't know how the OP feels, but in my view, $18k or so on speakers almost depletes his ...

@tomcarr  Agreed.  If I was in the position of the OP, I do the following: 1. Try to size up the assets and challenges of the acoustics of the room.  I'd lay hands on whatever gear I can find to listen with. I'd listen, position, and once some r...

@yyzsantabarbara  KEF Blade Meta? In a 20k budget? Is that possible?
I should start with speakers. This I know. I’d like to establish a new system.
When I did what you're doing, here in Denver, CO, I took the following approach: * Joined an audio club. There are now people in my area to talk to and hear their systems, for free. * Began asking questions on the forum. If you search my handle ...

"...and I don't take any advertiser money..."
Couple good discussions of this topic: https://youtu.be/6dwT5uWRMXQ?si=NEEpaOKfwnWQ8ree&t=117 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhn1ELAqhw4 Key point: a reviewer who wants to keep his audience has to get the sound right. If they're being paid...
New remastering of Steely Dan's Katy Lied review by Fremer
@slaw It's like that bathroom graffito: "No matter how beautiful s/he is, someone, somewhere is sick of their sh*t."
Multiple subwoofers work wonders
@tcutter I see a lot of visual symmetry in the room which is quite pleasing to the eye. Did you make some aural compromises to achieve this? Or does it just happen to sound better AND be visually symmetrical?
R2R next? Don't like ESS
@mattw73 I’m just more open to trying something that may be deliberately not as transparent or without the lowest THD. I agree. I have an R2R DAC and a tube amp. I had a tube DAC and it just muddied things up too much. I had another DAC that ...
"...and I don't take any advertiser money..."
What counts as "money"? I think the answer is "a lot of reviewers don’t take advertiser money." This is not a field to get rich in. I think that reviewers have a spotty record for trustworthiness for a different reason -- they like to start tren...
