Cables that measure the same but (seem?) to sound different
@avitacom vitacom"Measurements, e.g., resistance, inductance, capacitance, are, these days, easily made , recorded and compared but are gross and crude compared to the kinds of phenomena which may be discerned by the human ear and brain such as, s...
Critical listening and altered states
@ianb52 Good point about the "paradox that with certain altered states the detail of perception and emotional intensity are increased, but the ability to do focused critical listening (left brain-type activity) becomes difficult and not fun"I supp...
Two channel and home theater room under construction
Thanks for the reminder. I'll do another scan this weekend. Molding just went up yesterday. No floors yet, but they're coming. LVF with cork underneath. Then, some area rugs. The room will have to come together according to demands other than pure...

Cables that measure the same but (seem?) to sound different
@p05129 Glad you've landed on such firm opinions. Fist pump! Doesn't answer my OP in the slightest, but hey, free country.
Cables that measure the same but (seem?) to sound different
@denverfred "Maybe best to look outside the usual fields of study on this question."Exactly my thinking.@kijanki "How do you measure quality of interconnects shielding? When you hear a difference between cables it means they must be different (mea...
Critical listening and altered states
@mikelavigne Thanks for taking the question seriously and answering it in such detail. To others denigrating the idea of changing one's state of mind is not about getting "wasted." That is an interpretation that says more about fear than anything ...

Recent research into metamaterials for sound absorption -- any new products?
I don’t know enough about the underlying science to know how valuable this might be for people who work in the industry. But it seems like there are some fundamental scientific breakthroughs being made, and the way these might be employed by engin...
DAC Upgrade Advice, budget $5k
+1 Erik's suggestion. Indeed, it was diffusers that help take the edge off the treble & also widened the soundstage. Even if you get other gear down the road, these will still be useful.
DAC Upgrade Advice, budget $5k
It sounds like you like your present DAC a lot, except for:"the "width" of the soundstage is not as wide as I like and "edginess" in the final top registers of treble."That was a bit buried in your post.Others have a much more experience than I do...
Do tubes matter beyond gain stage on preamp?
+1 @dekayWhich tube dealers told you that? They're either manipulating you for some reason, or they don't really know what they're doing.A list of who said something that incompetent would be a service to all of us.Waiting to hear.
Learning to Listen: Neurological Evidence
@femoore12 I have a friend who's a jazz trumpeter and another who plays classical piano. Both understand there's something to be experienced with a better system, but they're both so used to listening *through* the aural presentation to the musica...
Anyone have experience with Octave integrated amps?
Might you want to try a tube preamp ahead of the Hegel, OP? That might give you a chance to soften things without losing good control of the bass on the speakers. Just a thought.
