Affordable vs. ultra expensive speakers - what's the difference?
For your next two cars, buy $30k cars instead of $50k cars and you've got an endgame speaker with the savings. Ok, that's a bit of a dumb comment, but given what people spend on cars, Starbucks, etc. the money spent on things that last a lifetime...
MHDT Orchid v Denafrips Pontus
Grannyring modified my Orchid and it opened up and got a bit quicker. I'm doing a shoot out with it vs. Holo Audio May this Sunday. I am going to be sorry I arranged that, I bet, but I really like that Orchid.
How does solo piano help you evaluate audio gear?
UPDATE: I listened to a bunch of recordings mentioned today. The piano recordings were unbelievably revealing tools. The power of the Colom recordings and also the Schiff pushed the speakers for dynamics, subtlety, honesty of color, hall reverb, ...
How does solo piano help you evaluate audio gear?
I attempt to tell you that as an "evaluator" for sound, that no one instrument be it a piano, guitar, oboe or human voice may by itself, hold utmost importance. Right. And I said more than once that I was not asking the question, "Which is the ...
How does solo piano help you evaluate audio gear?
@brownsfan  and others, I've been listening to the 1.5 minute piece, "Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings." It's an outstanding test, easy to get to know, and very revealing.
How does solo piano help you evaluate audio gear?
@richopp Clarification understood and appreciated. It seemed pretty clear that recording a piano is difficult, so I was a bit confused by the energy you put into your rebuttal. But we agree! Cheers!
How does solo piano help you evaluate audio gear?
@frogman -- thanks for the rec’s. Will try those. @jonwatches1 I don’t think piano will be very useful unless you listen to a lot of piano, and already know some good piano music note for note. And there is plenty a Piano cannot tell you. S...
Devore or Audio Note or other sensitive speakers: wanting to listen in Denver
@phantom_av Thanks for the suggestion. The classic series looks great. Maybe I can find someone in my area that can give me a listen.
How does solo piano help you evaluate audio gear?
@nonoise   If the initial movement (of a key, valve, etc.) is captured, followed by the strike of it, followed by the burst and then bloom, and then the associated spread, decay and reverb, the whole soundstage develops to a degree that can make...
How does solo piano help you evaluate audio gear?
@brownsfan @lalitk and others -- this is great! Thanks so much. I really do find it helpful in addition (of course) to the human voice. There's no either/or in any of this. What is hard with pianos is that not having heard the piano in the record...
How does solo piano help you evaluate audio gear?
Good points and very helpful. I went out of my way *not* to ask if it should be the only one. I'm really drilling here for phenomenological details, i.e., descriptions of what one notices in a piano recording that has probative value for a more ge...
How does solo piano help you evaluate audio gear?
@testpilot @chayro Thanks. Piano is important to me, too, so I'd listen for that reason. I do sometimes listen to music which is not the genre of what I usually listen to, but which nevertheless demonstrates something valuable about the system's...
Svs, Rel, or ?.
Very happy with Rythmik. Purchased very easily and with great communication via Ascend Acoustics. I also have a REL, which I like. If I had to choose between them, I prefer the Rythmik to the REL. In my opinion, there is a lot to do to make subs ...
Fascinated By GR Research Channel
Most people wouldn't bother to upgrade any of their equipment. They'd just sell it and buy something else.  Danny at GR understands that for a subset of the market that is willing to tweak or upgrade, this can be done at a fairly low $$ cost. The...
Who Offers a Highly Musical Preamp using a 6SN7 tube and a remote?
@isaacc7 @jackd  I am in Denver and have a great tech nearby. If/when I improve my preamp game, I'll consult with him about older models. I know he really likes deHavilland. I am saving this thread into my "end game folder" and now really have a s...
