The "Broken Blue Point Special Club"
I thought I was the only dummy that trashed cartridges due to my hamfisted dexterity! After killing the Blue Point Special many years ago, I happened upon a NOS Shure Ultra 500. You Know what? The Shure even sounded better(to me, in my system) So,...
Anyone ever read the listener magazine
I usually enjoy Listener, but I don't think I will renew my subscription because, frankly, I think these guys are just plain lazy. I expect a mag. that only comes out every 2 months to be chock full of goodies. I don't know what they are doing all...
Best Martini s
I switch around from Manhattens to Martinis. Yes, Bombay Sapphire is fine Gin, but, too much bite for a Martini. It's Boodles or Beefeater for me... 2.5 oz. with .5 oz. of Vermouth and as much ice as you can fit. The worst premium Gin for a Martin...
Best single-malt Scotch...
Glendronach seems sanely priced considering it's quality. Silky, smokey, smoooth. Much better than the 15 year old Aberlour. You will all probably hate me for this, but, I like it with chocolate!
long term disappointments?
Note that all of the speakers listed above were very favorably reviewed in the magazines at one time or another... something to think about.
Classe preamps
I used a DR4 pre for years and never heard a peep out of it other than music. Before buying, I also auditioned the DR5 and DR6. I actually preferred the 4 despite the fact that it was the least expensive of the bunch. I don't know how it works now...
Magnepan MG III
I had IIIa's for almost ten years and still think they are great. Also, an excellent value even at their new price. Believe it or not I got the best sound out of them with a pair of 15 watt push pull tube amps.Better than with the mighty 300 watt ...
Cary Cabling
When I had an SLA80 amp and SLP90 pre, I found surprisingly that the YBA diamond interconnect beat out all the comparably (and also more expensive) priced cables I tried from the cable company (10 different brands!!)
Syrinx and Linn Basik Plus tonearms?
My guess is that if you can mount the Syrinx on the AR, it will better the Linn regardles of which arm you use on it. Sorry Linnies, but if anybody bothered to set up an AR as carefully as Linns are treated, the AR would be much more respected.
Do you play?
Since when is a musician also an audiophile? Every musician I have ever known has had no interest in "reproducing" music because they can "create" music. Please do not be offended by my statement, it is just what I have seen to be so fron 30+ year...
help with absolute phase
There might be a whole other problem that goes along with preamps that invert phase: Does it mean that your cable to the amp is sending the negative signal through the positive conductor and visa-versa?!! Think about it... most cables are designed...
Nottingham Analogue experience?
I don't know what tables you are used to,but, I'll bet you fing the Hyperspace to be in another league altogether. I really enjoyed my Space Deck. The Nottingham products sound less like turntables than any others. The music just pours out of them...
Mapleshade and Maple Audio Cables
Some do, and some don't.I have heard fat cables that also sound thin. I don't however know what guage the actual conductors inside are. I don't think my Magnan cable sounds thin and it also uses tiny guage wire.
Mapleshade and Maple Audio Cables
Hasn't anyone noticed that the double helix interconnects sound very much like they look...thin. Very transparent yes, but partially because they lean out the sound. I did actually like them and consider them a good value, but, this sound didn't wor...
Preamp Ideas For 777ES EVo Maggie IIIa s
I had IIIa's for years, and found that they could really sing with low powered tube amps, but, got very anemic sounding with passive pre amps. I didn't go through tons of preamps, but when I plugged in the Cary SLP 90 it was an awesome and immedia...
