soft dome speakers
I've become convinced that it is impossible to pre-judge the sound of speakers based on the materials of the drivers. I've heard soft domes that "sound" like metal domes and metal domes that "sound" like soft domes. Keep an open mind
The Amadeus's little brother arrives
Thanks, Chachas. So I guess rather than saying "Well Tempered Lab Introduces The Simplex," the blog should say "Well Tempered Lab Introduce The Simplex. Eventually." :-)I don't know what the heck I'm buying!-Bob
Best step up device for low output Grados?
I suspect Grado would recommend a Grado phono preamp. I've seen at least one post somewhere that called it a "match made in heaven." If I recall correctly, the low-output Grado carts require a 47K load. The combination of high gain and high resist...
The Amadeus's little brother arrives
Thanks, Chachas. The blog sure seems to indicate otherwise. May I ask where you got your information? Thanks.-Bob
Why I like my home system better than live music
I listen seriously only to classical music. The worst live sound I've ever heard is light years ahead of the best home-audio system I've ever heard. They are just two entirely different realities.-Bob
What is a good spartan turntable set up?
Words like "spartan" and "simple" make the Opera-Consonance LP6.1 come immediately to mind (link below). To me, it's quite a looker, in a very unostentatious way. It goes for $1,125, but from the general tone of your post, I'm thinking you may hav...
The Amadeus's little brother arrives
Your guesses are as good as mine, Hifiharv. All I really know is what's written on the blog I linked to. I think the implication is that the Simplex will cost less than the Amadeus. I suppose that Bill Firebaugh's statement that it is his "favorit...
What MC for $1,000-$2,000?
Who knew that more than 35 years later, Ivor Tiefenbrun's sales shtick would still rule the analog world? I've never found that the turntable is more important than the cartridge, and I've long known that toe-tapping or "following the tune" has ab...
Looking for the Honda S2000 of turntables
I have no personal experience with it, but if I were in your position, I'd try to check out a Michell Tecnodec (googling will turn up lots of results). I've seen one in person, and it has a very high cool factor, based only on appearances. But it ...
Does "perfect alignment of cart" eliminate 100% ?
"It's called "un-distortion", a world where everything becomes crystal clear and transparent."Oh! You mean like CDs, right? :-)-Bob
Does "perfect alignment of cart" eliminate 100% ?
An interesting passage from Keith Howard's "Arc Angles" article in the March "Stereophile:""In fact there is another vital parameter, namely linear groove speed (that is, the speed at which the groove passes the stylus), which varies by a factor o...
Looking for the Honda S2000 of turntables
"Elizabeth has clearly not driven an S2000."Nor has she had an SL-1200, I suspect. "Tweaker's delight"??? Nonsense. And getting it modded by Kevin at KAB is NOT getting it modded by Mr. XYZ but by one of the most widely respected, most honest purv...
Does "perfect alignment of cart" eliminate 100% ?
You can download a Stevenson protractor at the link below. Actually, it combines Baerwald and Lofgren (presumably "B"), too. I've never had any problem printing the protractor at 1:1 onto an inexpensive photo paper. Works fine for me. The only pos...
Well Tempered Amadeus
Thanks, Chashas1. So if I understand you correctly, you CAN adjust the tracking angle simply by virtue of the "play" afforded by the cartridge-mounting screws in the headshell mounting holes, correct? (BTW, by "twisting" in my above post, I was re...
Well Tempered Amadeus
Chashas1, I'm still kind of struggling to understand various comments about the Amadeus. If the headshell is fixed in position, how is it possible to "set the cartridge parallel to the lines"? This would imply you can alter the position of the car...
