Thoughts on the Supratek Chardonnay
Arkio, I agree, I think it is a bargain at $3000 compared to others I've heard. I think Bwhite's assessment is right on the money. Once you find a combination of tubes that suits your system it is a piece you can easily live with. Veiled is way to...
Thoughts on the Supratek Chardonnay
I had a Syrah for awhile. It was pleasant enough but lacked the resolution I was looking for.Arkio, what do you mean by "the preamp looks bulletproof?" "Sounds Awesome" is subjective and I have no reason to doubt your assesment, but to designate s...
Pass amps with Avantgarde duos?
Target sells an amp that uses the same chip as the ClariT for $30. Add a battery and you are in business. The First Watt is incompatible with the Duos.
12AX7 or 12AT7
The U has less gain and lower plate impedance than an X or T, about 1/3 the gain of the T and 2/3 of the plate impedance, about 1/5 the gain of the X and about 1/10 the plate impedance. It has about the same current capabilities of the T.Unless yo...
12AX7 or 12AT7
Yes and no, mostly no. It will plug in and work but it is not designed to be a replacement. The big differences are that the X has about twice as much gain and the T can handle quite a bit more current. So you usually see an X in the early stages ...
Anything better than Vandersteen 3A sig for the $
Have you listened to the Vandersteens? I agree with Warner, and would add they sound sluggish and can be easily bettered for that money or less.
CJ Premier 10 - still competitive?
Here's a can of worms for you, open at your own peril. Perhaps the tubes in the 10 could stand to be replaced. Your overall impressions don't suprise except for the grain in the 10.
Delores Keane fans?
I have a copy of Tom Russell's "The Man From God Knows Where" that features her and I too was captivated by her voice. I highly recommend this album.
CJ Premier 10 - still competitive?
The PR14 is basically a PR10 with a remote. It uses the same circuit topology, a single triode buffered by a cathode follower and sounds about the same. This is a tried a true design that is still used by numerous manufacturers so I would not worr...
Sonic Frontiers to Conrad Johnson .
I owned a set of those B&W and would not describe them as "warm and inviting." Far from it. Accurate, dynamic, analytical, revealing, but not warm and inviting. They were the type of component that wows you initially but I found them tiresome ...
Powercord to tame brightness and add musicality
I'm not familiar with Krell model numbers. When you say "all Krell" does that include speakers and cables?Just wondering how you determined that the power cord for the cdp was causing your system to be bright? Using a power cord as a tone control ...
Is the BIX table extint?
Yes, I heard it. It was the first time I heard any of those components so I can't really attribute anything to one particular component, but the whole system sounded very nice. The analog was better than the digital they played. That is the only c...
Is the BIX table extint?
I was in Brian's shop this week and can confirm that this turntable is a bargain. A great guy to deal with. Very knowledgeable.
"They simply don't make them like this anymore"
I am confused. Do you mean to say that these vintage pieces are left behind, or that they can compete with modern designs? "Back in the day" we referred to Phase linear as "Flame Linear." Not only did it sound like crap but it it went up in smoke ...
Which turntable should I keep?
Start with a cartridge replacement. The suspension has stiffened over the past 20 years, and there have been significant improvements in design and materials. Using a 20 year old cartridge is like driving a car on 20 year old tires. You are headed...
