needing help deciding on int amp to power Quad 22L
If I had to stay in your list I'd go for the Marantz PM-15S1. If I could look outside your list, in a heartbeat I'd go for the Musical Fidelity A308 ($1300 2nd hand) or the A5 ($1400 2nd hand).
production or reproduction
Mr Tennis, I think you'll find the most often stated advice throughout this forum can be paraphrased as "listen and then choose what you most like the sound of". For some reason you seem to infer that the advice here could be paraphrased as "buy t...
Any Young Audiophiles Out There?
Cwlondon, I'm also 40+ and use AKGs and Ultimate Ears but it's not people who are posting in an audiophile forum that I'm talking about. I'm talking about the huge number of 40+ who don't even know that there is such a thing as an audiophile or wh...
Any Young Audiophiles Out There?
FrankC makes a really important observation regarding headphone listening. I honestly believe that this is where the younger generation can really get an opportunity to sample better sound. A relatively inexpensive upgrade to a half-decent pair of...
Any Young Audiophiles Out There?
Cool Hanaleimike!! My son still has so much to learn!:-) It's so great seeing just how much my son loves music. I feel sad for kids that don't get this exposure to music and good sound at an early age - I think it really does start this early!
Any Young Audiophiles Out There?
My son is 22 months old and every night before bed he says "fi, fi, fi" and I let him turn on our second system, hit "play" and then forward through the tracks on a compilation CD. When a couple of his favourite tracks (Weezer - Island in the Sun,...
Thoughts on the best bang for the buck
I would also go for a second hand Musical Fidelity, either A3.5 or the 150w/ch A300.
Entry Level Cables
I second the Blue Jeans Cables - great value.
whats the finest recorded cd you've heard?
"Peace, Back By Popular Demand" - Keb Mo"Hope" - Hugh Masekela"Nature" - Dave's True Story"A Walk Across the Rooftops" - The Blue Nile
Your average size city apartment deserves speaker
Avalon Indra - just a stunning speaker and would handle a medium size room without a problem.
Reducing PC Jitter
I can highly recommend the Monarchy DIP. I have the non upsampling model and the difference it made to the Wadia dock was very significant. Haven't tried with a PC set up however.
Small Floorstander/Monitor good with tubes
I was going to suggest the Living Voice Avatars and then saw them on your list. Stunning speakers with tubes. Not sure about how they go when close to walls however.
Error correction
From everything I've read, if you want the most accurate transfer of your CDs, you should definitely keep the "error correction" on. In my experience, there is insignificant additional time added to the import process.
Speakers for the ears, eyes, and for the decade
Some excellent speakers in your list and I commend you on your music test of Hugh Masekela's Hope - what a great album. When a work colleague was looking for new speakers we auditioned the Avalon Indra several times with this album (amongst others...
The Room, not us, determines our speaker choices
Never thought I'd write these words, but I agree with Mr. Tennis to some extent on this one!:)I would prefer to select speakers within my budget that I most like the sound of based on as many auditions as I can do. However, I would only audition s...
