Lifespan of amps and preamps?
I've encountered many 40 to 50-year-old electrolytic caps that test within spec and perform their intended function. Any half-way decent cap will last 20+ years if the associated circuit and its heat dissipation are competent. People like to belie...
New Yamaha integrated amps
Why would anyone buy a Yamaha amp when you can purchase a Parasound integrated.  I wonder why manufacturers promote watts when the real spec should be current?  Watts are a bigger number.I switched from the original Parasound Halo Integrated to an...
New Yamaha integrated amps
I'm not convinced the move to toroidal transformers is a good one. The best attribute of the current crop of Yamaha integrateds is the bass extension. It's my suspicion that some of that is attributable to the EI transformers. Of all the amps I've...
Hunt for new floor standers
Holy Shelter-in-Place! It's been a while since I've checked this thread. I thought I'd add some info on what I've been looking at these past few weeks. Any thoughts on the Monitor Audio Silver 500's? These are in their 6G and consistently get grea...
Mytek Liberty vs Chord Qutest
Save $1100 and get a Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital. I bought the Qutest as an intended upgrade but it doesn't sound any better than the Pro-Ject.
Is the 2.5 way speaker the ideal home speaker?
@helomechThat's interesting, usually three way speakers are considered ideal due to the midrange covering the entire human voice and much of the piano without the crossover involved. I wonder if your hearing more bass boominess from 3 way designs?...
Is the 2.5 way speaker the ideal home speaker?
I'm not sure I follow, @helomech - Usually higher tweeter points are achieved with 3-way systems which use a "true" midrange. It's just my experience that 3-ways often lack the transparency of a good 2-way, I can only guess it's due to the additio...
Is the 2.5 way speaker the ideal home speaker?
A 3-way design should preferable, at least in theory, but it requires an additional type of driver and a more complex crossover network, and both of those increase the cost.and often degrades transparency.
Preamp and Amp how much influence each contributes?
Its impossible for separates to match the performance of a really good integrated amp without spending a whole lot more money. This is because of the simple fact the two components require an extra power cord and interconnect. Completely incorrect.
Looking for a hybrid integrated to do it all!
The MOSFET Yamahas sound more like a real tube amp than most hybrids -- tube sound with none of the drawbacks.

Acoustic Suspension sound in 2020?
Helomech, the acoustic coupler in the 2 and 3 is an active driver. Wondering if you know any technical details re how it essentially functions as a PR.Would never, ever think that the bass in the 3 lacks snap, but of course that’s subjective and p...
Acoustic Suspension sound in 2020?
Vandersteen 2s and 1s are sealed-box enclosures, no? If no ports, therefore acoustic suspension, unless I misunderstand the definition. There is also an interview with RV in which he cites his inspiration from the sound of the acoustic-suspension ...
Magnepan .7 issue?
Hmmm, that does seem a bit much. I had to use the tape method but the tape has to be pulled vertically, parallel to the fabric. The fabric sticks because the panel is basically covered in a layer of glue that remains tacky. The bonding of the foil...
Magnepan .7 issue?
The metal bars are only for transport. The grille fabric getting stuck to the panels during transport is common. Your speakers should be fine as long as you didn't pull the foil strips from the mylar when "pinching" the grille fabric. In a dark ro...
