Upsampling and the FR of a DAC
As you know, the filters kick in at half the sampling frequency. So at 96kHz the highest cut-off is at 48kHz; with a 192kHz file the FR can go higher (i.e. up to 96kHz). Of course, there may not be any info up there -- other than noise, that is!
is it possible to make digital audio sound like vintage vinyl
@mikelavigne it is hard to find an Lp and digital file from the same mic feed, yet both native analog and digital. and that is what you need ideally, but it’s easy to find a digital file and vinyl pressing from the same tape master, and when you d...
Convergent Audio SL1 Ultimate vs
I had a CAT ultimate when it was still current, very many years ago. It was an outstanding pre, I am not sure there are many (any?) better choices out there for 2.5-3.2 k, I certainly cannot think of any!
stand-mount speakers for classical music
Try to find a pair of Devores to listen to -- it doesn’t have to be their latest model. The Devores play well close to the wall, i.e. you don't lose much in terms of soundstage which is importantwhen there's a full orchestra involved (think: Mahle...
Short speaker wire and long inter connects or reverse
My experience is, long IC and short spkr wire. It always worked for me, either using tubes (EAR 519, Jadis I don't remember monos) or solid state (Kraft class A, BFA, MFA 1000m etc).Of course, common sense dictates the opposite -- low level signal...
stand-mount speakers for classical music
For classical you need dynamics, minimal phase anomalies, and naturalness -- to name a few. Try ATC 20s or whatever else in ATC fits your budget; also Devore (Gibbon): whatever fits your budget. The Devores are particularly important as they can p...
Review: Fritz Heiler’s Carbon 7 SE Mk 2 bookshelf speakers
Thank you for the thorough and thoughtful review.I have most of the recordings you used and I am intrigued by these small speakers!
Strange Rivers
J. Baez, "Strange Rivers" ?  Indicative of our times perhaps?Regards
Thoughts on SS bass. Tube mid and high tube pre
Assuming the Bryston's input sensitivity is close or identical to your other amps, go for it!You should get much more bass energy than now.BTW, you do have a pre (or a volume pot) somewhere in the system? Regards
European Voltage: options
No brand to recommend, sorry. Just at least twice (if not four times) the wattage needed, C or E type core, and you're set. There may even be a local shop winding them...
MSB Diamond DAC V
@blumartini Hi, I just checked their site and the US importer is Audioskies. In Europe, it costs around 30k euro, so I'm guessing it's under 40k in the US (not peanuts, but a lot less than my MSB)Regards
European Voltage: options
A 110-to-220V transformer comes to mind. Additional benefit: the transformer will filter out circuit noise as well as give the right voltage.
MSB Diamond DAC V
@blumartini Again thank you for your input and my next question is what Dac is that you now have on loan and what is it doing differently in your system? Sorry it took me so long to respond -- the other machine is an Ideon Audio "Absolute" (lates...
Recapping Krell KSA 250
Strongly second jollygreen's advice above. Simple to do and worth it -- better safe than sorry!
MSB Diamond DAC V
Same here, MSB's R2R dacs have an awesome tight bottom end that needs to be dug out of the floor and your guts it’s that low, but only when it’s presented in the music. Obviously that owner has a serious defect somewhere in the chain, if he sa...
