Horns and Triodes...?
Hi Tom, Paul- Geez, I don't have the exact measurements handy and no pics yet (I'm a bit of a wet rag -- sorry). The whole construction is on an open baffle:The Lowther is wearing the wooden phase-plug. The tractrix's flare frequency was calculated...
Horns and Triodes...?
I tried the Norwegian (the originals, as per Tom) pipes and wasn't thrilled -- with EX-4's.HOWEVER, what is spectacular: front loaded (tactrix horn) PM-4's driven by "good-bandwidth" 300B (i.e. using big Tango OPT) + an open baffle (sub)woof syste...
Another wattage question.
As per Bombay, above. Note, however, that you need the "energy" producing capabilities in an amp in order to enjoy the dynamic headroom in music. In Bombaywalla's example above, the amp will be able to give you ~20db of headroom (difference b/ween...
Senior Audiophiles - Audiophile since the 60-70's?
Allegedly, my musical trips started as a baby, when my mother would play an LP (on repeat) on an old changer -- to keep me quiet. I was first smitten by "audiophile" sound in the '60s. I still remember that experience: friends of my parents had HU...
Audiophile Terms?? I need a dictonary
Marco (Jax2) -- lovely :) A definite reference!
Leaving HT for 2 channel-Good or Not?
As per all the rest -- I am happy with two-channel dvd. BUT, I use full-range bi-amped speakers (get stereo sub) AND speaker positioning has to take into account the screen, as there's no centre speaker (positioning isn't much of a hassle if there...
Please give me your 2 cents...budget 30-50k
Sabailey: In comparing the B&W 802 & 800 I have found similarities. In both models it is easier to produce a sound spectrum that is more seamless top to bottom (to my deaf ears, of course) than with the 801. In the 801 the difficulty I had...
Are vintage speakers really that good?
Royy, apart from the fact that Sean speaks for me too -- better than I would have done -- the speakers listed are the Tannoy GRF & the JBL 4311! The 4311 is a 3-way control speaker used in professional applications. The other pair is a legenda...
Audiophiles & music-have you got it wrong?
I'm on the opposite side -- music outweighs the cost of the hardware (by far, I should think). OTOH, as Jeffloistarca notes, I wonder when I'll have the time to listen to all the software I have say, once again; the rate of incoming music outstrip...
Physically awkward components...
Full-range speakers & Class A ss must be the worst of the lot; one of my amps weighs ~150lbs and it's physically large. A tube pre is composed of two heavy parts -- that's cumbersome but manageable. The pre's cd input is on the far side away f...
Best affordable amp for Thiel CS3.6
GamuT 200W stereo is considered a good match. I listened to that combo driven by a Rowland pre and the result was very musical and nicely detailed. Big room (~35x20).
Run direct from ML 390s CD player without preamp?
Advantage is less circuitry between you & the recorded signal. Disadvantage is the impedance (and load input sensitivity) is not always matched between the source and load. The output impedance of the 390S is low, ~10 ohm / maxi output ~4 volt...
Wadia 631 grainy and "dirty" sounding vs ML 390s
Gnsc -- good point. I was referring to the standard 861. Thanks
Wadia 631 grainy and "dirty" sounding vs ML 390s
Those are very good players IMO, and I would agree that the ML could have the edge over the 631 (but perhpas not the bigger Wadia). As to "better" sounding one-piece cdp's, it's a matter of taste; my tastes (classical music) would opt for a Lindem...
Do It Yourself Speakers
Diy is the way to go for high performance speakers -- unless your bank account is superlative!I strongly second Slaufer's recommendation for the Orions. This is a VERY complicated and elaborate design; easily amongst the best sounding dynamic spea...
