Is there a best cartridge track force gauge?
Of all ... setup(s)...VTF is the easiest to optimize by earActually, I agree -- as long as you don't get carried away over (or well under) the limits! But a reliable digital gauge is useful to re-set a cartridge to an optimum setting found in the ...
15" vs 18" subwoofer - which to buy?
Eldartford -- agreed. How 'bout two subs then, driven from line level:)
New cart, step-up or ???
IF the cartridge loading is OK and you don't sense any loss of energy (check this against a line source), don't do anything.ALternatively, see if anyone around you has cheepo step-ups, of the rca plug-in variety (PE used to sell these). If you can...
15" vs 18" subwoofer - which to buy?
Is it a non-contested fact that multiple 12" subwoofers could match or best a single 18" subwoofer in terms of quality of low bass?In theory you can do it. In practise it is VERY difficult to simulate a single point source (the 18") with many 12"....
I am asking your opinion as to the best turntable
Bill -- knowing where you're coming from & where you are, it's difficult to recommend a "best". Rather, and keeping to what I've LISTENED to, I'll throw three choices based on sonics of course, + EASE of set-up & operation, reliability and...
In what ways modern speakers better the old Tannoy
Gongalee -- do you actually have the 15" Gold?? If you do, just heed the advice above. You'd be hard-pressed and/or very wealthy to do better today!
Do materials alter frequencies and speed?
Rsbeck -- "dynamics" are energy related. Lossy energy transfer can impact. Frequency response measurement is time-related.As to the evidence etc & alia, I believe Aball answered your questions, above. Cheers
Turntable height
Shventus -- interesting:)! Did you check what arm they're using? A floating Scroeder perhaps? Cheers
More output from Analog set up, MC Transformer?
The trannies Bent uses are very good (Stevens & Billington). Are you sure the cartridge loading is correct? I assume you've already tried a higher setting, etc, but thought I'd mention it.
Which is better, gain in phono stage or pre amp?
Textbook logic: use the step-up trannies in the Plinius rather than an active stage, for the extra db.Unless, of course, you wish to change yr preamplification altogether as Mike suggests
Imaging Problem: Blinding Flash of the Obvious
A slight variation on Ozz. Try placing spkrs at an angle to their back wall, bringing the right one (where the ceiling is 8) further out. Reposition your sitting area accordingly (it'll move to the left and will be slightly angled, accordingly). B...
How does one get off the merry-go-round?
Hallo Detlof, how GOOD to see you back!!! I am .. back with the music and the means of reproduction do not matter, because the message, if it is valid, the mind, if it is receptive, will not even be aware of the medium, as poor as it may beIndeed,...
VPI MK III + Alphason Xenon or Thorens 160 + Opal?
Zanth -- the price differential is very high and I second the cheaper, Thorens, choice. Apart from the fun of tweaking the Thorens, you have money left over to buy a good alignment protractor with which you can set up the cartridge precicely and q...
Biamping; Amps w. Different power ratings?
I'd use the higher powered amp for the bass units of course. The relative amplitude is not a matter of Watt rating but of input sensitivity of each amp. If it's the same there's no problem. If I understood yr questions correctly. CHeers
How big is it?
Largely, room size has to do with the spkrs size. A room's dimensions are important (see cardas' site and immedia's) to minimise/ control standing waves. Now, a BIG room is a relative matter -- no. The biggest I have seen/ listened in is ~2250'sq. ...
