Vienna Liszt vs. Focal Sopra No2
arboc, I have owned the Avalon Ascendants and know what you mean about it being too polite.  There is a certain "sameness" to the sound and the dynamics including the bass are somewhat lacking.  It has some really nice imaging and midrange.  I lis...
New Member Needs Help
golftime, there is so much equipment out there that it can become a real daunting, frustrating and confusing environment.  A good audio store will get you started.  Hopefully you can find several that carry respected lines to base your decision on...
New Member Needs Help
This will be an opinion that is probably outside all of the other responses.  You can spend a lot of time chasing down issues with your current system.  How important is music to you?  Is it only for background entertainment or is on a deeper leve...
Proportion of expenses
There are lots of variables but this is how I would proceed:1)  Determine the location of system and decide on monitors or floor standing speakers.  I would allocate 50% to the speakers.2)  40% would be allocated to the source, amp/preamp or integ...
Is high end audio to snooty for its own good?
I think manufactures or salespeople can become snooty.  The audiophiles that I know with systems way more expensive than mine just like music and sharing it.  Sometimes the technical talk goes over my head since a lot of them are advanced DIY types.
Devialet Silver Phantom
I have heard them a couple of times at a dealer.  I thought they were more of a lifestyle speaker.  I didn't care for the low end since it seemed artificial and there was a boxy midrange character.
When rap came out 30 years ago I thought it was just a fad
Hmmm, to summarize RAP isn't music (rhythm and poetry), boring, demeaning to many including women, and you don't need any musical talent.  Only Dr. Seuss lyrics required.
New floor stand speakers
I was recently on a quest to get some new floorstanders and probably listened to 17 different models from the following manufactures:  Wilson, Magico, Rockport, B&W, Vandersteen, Harbeth, Focal, Vienna Acoustics and maybe some I forgot.  I thi...
Soliciting Upgrade Advice
I think the B&W 804's would be worth a listen. They were one of the speakers that caught my ear during a recent speaker upgrade and I listened to the B&W line from the 805's to the 802's as well as 12 other manufactures.
Best High End Audio Manufacturer???
My vote is for Keith Herron of Herron Audio. His stuff falls under the normal radar but it sounds good, doesn't break, can be upgraded and he has some of the best service in the industry...what else do you want?
Admittedly a bit lost
Badri, you are lucky to have a good choice of dealers in the area. You should be able to find an excellent speaker. In your quest, be sure to listen to speakers that are above your budget. It is helpful to see what you may be giving up at your pri...
Admittedly a bit lost
Audiokinesis makes some geat points especially about the impedance discussion. One other tip I forgot to mention is that I will generally like a speaker that I want to keep turning up louder rather than the ones I want to turn down.
Admittedly a bit lost
I would go to as many dealers as you can to get a flavor of the speakers that sound good to you. You will need to determine if you want stand mounted or floor standing models. When you can narrow it down it would also be a good idea to bring your ...
Advice on using a laser for speaker positioning
I find a laser easier to use than a tape measure. It really helps with toe in and you can shoot to a target in the listening room. I also use it adjust the vertical angle of the tweeters. It also makes finding the first reflection points easy by s...
Toe-in recommendation for stand mount monitors
Sometimes it's helpful if you can have someone toe in the speakers as you are listening to them. It will become apparent where a good spot is as for a starter as they are moved around. I haven't tried the radical toe in as discussed above, but hav...
