Any suggestions for good obscure music?
If you like jazz and good songwriting, try the Brooklyn-based group Brock Mumford, led by guitarist and vocalist Matt Munisteri. Their first cd is excellent and is called "Love Story." Check out the band at brockmumford.com.
which book to get?
Neither one, if you are new to the music. Get hold of the Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz. 6 lps. Also available on cd I think (if you must). It documents the early history of jazz right and continues to the modern period. Really well done....
Best object in your listening room.
Open-back banjos by Kevin Enoch (fretless) and Bart Reiter (Whyte Laydie copy), Gibson A-2 mandolin, and a Martin D-28 guitar.
No Audiophiles in Hollywood
The new "Stepford Wives" movie has some scenes of a wealthy men's club, which is equipped with lots of dark wood paneling and leather furniture...and a couple of nice McIntosh monoblock amplfiers tucked into the bar area.
Looking for moderate priced MC phono pre
I've been happy with the solid-state Dynavector P-75 phono stage I got recently. I use it as follows: VPI Aries Black Knight w. SDS / JMW9 arm / Dynavector 17d2 karat / Audio Research LS-3 linestage. Price is about 650 dollars for the P-75.Jim
$100 Challenge: Build this system
I built a system for my 14 year old daughter around a Henry Kloss Model 88 radio (no cd player built in). Cost was 99 dollars for a b-stock unit obtained on-line from Cambridge Sound Works, although I think you'd have to e-bay one now since I hear...
I'm thinking that youngsters are getting burned .
After an approximately 15 year hiatus, I played my old copy the other day, after cleaning it of course. This one has aged beautifully in my opinion; it's a classic, and well-recorded as a bonus.
What Irish music will you be playing on St Pat's?
Kevin Burke, "Promenade." To say nothing of my own Irish banjo stylings...

New System for the House
The Linn Classik integrated might work in your situation, which seems to be one in which you don't desire to make the sound system the main focus of the room. The Linn is very compact and does not call attention to itself with hi-fi nerd design or...

Help Speakers trapped on bookshelves
That's a pretty small room for cranking up those speakers. Why not consider a really good set of headphones for your critical listening? Trust me when I say that if you're living in an apartment you'll definitely need them after the babies arrive ...

Keeping it LOW
Looks like you are mainly into classical music, but if you're willing to try a pop cd, here's an interesting one: P.J. Harvey's _To Bring You My Love_ album. Check out the opening riff on "Working for the Man." Excellent album, by the way, as we'v...
The end of LP collecting????
Thanks for the post Chazzbo, which lays out the current LP situation pretty well. I say this after studying it for a long time though... Why all the crazy grammar and brain-bending typos? Why not run a spell check on your prose? And maybe throw in...
