Acoustic Zen Tsunami AC vs. .............
Give some consideration to TG Audio SLVR power cords. Bob Crump, their designer, was involved in the development of the JC-1, and I've found his wires to be exceptional. In my system the SLVRs have even displaced Elrod Statements (albeit on tube a...
Tube Amp Suggestions
Didactically, you've really gotta lessen your reliance on specs and do a bit more listening. Like you I was a SS addict for years. Then I heard my first really good tube amp - a SET design with all that distortion and the damping factor of a damp ...
Tube Amp Suggestions
While the Canary CA-300 is an 8 wpc SET, their CA-301SE is a 22 wpc push-pull amp that has very attractive specs and build quality. It may be available used within the original poster's budget, but Canary 300B p-p amps seem to be rare on the used ...
which amp for 12,500
If you want tubes take a very hard look at the Canary CA-339. By far the best amps I've owned, though I use them on speakers that are somewhat easier to drive than your 802s. Another option would be the Convergent Audio JL-2. There's a review of t...
Best single-malt Scotch...
Timchen, for good books on single malts, look for anything by Michael Jackson (no, not THAT Michael Jackson). A good place to start might be "Michael Jackson's Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch" available on-line.
Speaker cables for JM Lab DIVA?
TG Audio HSR. Lovely, lovely cables, at $800 for 8 feet. They've beaten out some pretty heavy contenders in my system - AZ Satori, Magnan Signature, Argent Pursang...They are silver, but there isn't a trace of leanness about them. They have a full...
Best Bike to ride before a good listening session
Ha, it's all just self-delusion! You know in your heart that all bikes ride the same. I bet in a BMX test you couldn't tell any of them apart ;-)
Is it worth spending $10k on CD-only player today?
I asked the same question, and my answer was "yes". My rationale is that there is an enormous amount much redbook product out there, and the fact all the new releases support that format means obsolesence just isn't an issue. I remain unconvinced ...
Speakers to replace B&W N804s ?????
You could take a look at the Coincident Partial Eclipse (or Super Eclipse III if you have the budget). All the speakers in the Coincident line sound very good - quick, realistic and smooth, with excellent imaging and a well balanced tonality that'...
Audio's Most Enduring Products.
The Sota Sapphire. I just sold a Series II with an Alphason arm to a new friend. It's at least 19 years old, has required no tweaking or repairs, and still sounds great. If I was going to get back into vinyl I'd buy another Sota in a New York minute.
Oversampling/Increased dither: a lot of hype?
I agree with Sean, but I'd add a caveat that the ultrasonics appear to be more of a theoretical than a real-world problem. I have yet to hear of amp or speaker damage that could be attributed to them. In a similar vein, the "advantages" of oversam...
Survey-What is your most used source?
100% redbook CDs. I recently sold my SOTA Sapphire after not listening to it for four years. A good CD player helps, of course...
Cry me a river
"King of Rome", "Small Victories" and "Off the Rails" - all from Garnet Rogers' album "Small Victories". I dunno, I must have been in some kind of mood that night...
Tell us compliments received on your system...
From my girlfriend: "I really like the way it makes John Prine sound so cynical!" From a non-audiophile: "Pretty nice for such old amplifiers - I mean with tubes and everything. Does anyone still make them?"And "Wow, I never heard 16-bit sound so ...
Best single-malt Scotch...
I tried SA Triple Bock a couple of times, but wasn't that thrilled - it was just too thick and unbalanced for me. Samiclaus is about as far as I can go in that direction. I do like Celebrator Doppelbock a lot. It's not much of a cool-me-down lawnm...
