Power cords different lengths.
Power cords act like power conditioners. The greater the length, the more conditioning. I acquired two Audio Quest Hurricanes; one 1 meter and one 2 meter. It was really clear that they both improved the sound, the two meter notably more than the ...
Cardas hierarchy - older/newer - who has experience?
Older Cardas were markedly warmer. Over time Cardas has moved to more detailed and transparent wires. Additionally they also have a sound characteristic hierarchy of more neutral ( brighter / detailed) the higher level the interconnect. The logic ...
Best Audiophile desktop for under $2500?
As folks have pointed out, the issue with the question is the word audiophile. No, no chance this will happen for either $2,500 or with a PC involved. Doesn’t mean you cannot get enjoyable sound out of it. I enjoy my office system.   Given his c...
Do You Buy Speakers Without Hearing Them?
In general no. Descriptions of the sound of speakers is only really effective if done in relation to speakers you have heard and know. Otherwise each qualitative statement has little quantitative information. A comment like a bit bright and detail...
What qualities stand out in really good solid state preamps?
OP…”That sets a benchmark for those sorts of concerts; but does it do for mixed, PA-driven live music, EDM, etc. what it does for acoustic music concerts?”   Actually, if you think about it, by having a true reference for your system vs the real...
What qualities stand out in really good solid state preamps?
@decooney “For a component that is "supposed to be neutral", "adding nothing", looking at history of threads and posts over the past 15-20 years…” You bring up some good empirical evidence that neutral is not what most people are looking for… alt...
shy about prices
Having taken marketing in graduate school I have a very different take on marketing. It is to emphasize the positive attributes and get the consumers attention through all the other produces. Many people like me would not consider exaggerating or ...
Power cable for AQ Niagara 5000
Have you not been a fan of AudioQuest before the Storm series. I was never a fan of AQ before Storm. But Storm is the best power cord I have ever tried. The most neutral and dynamic. I have tried a lot of others, including Shunyata and Nordost, bu...
Class D, "Control (Variable Gain)," Amplifier versus Class A/B Separates?
I would not so much concentrate on the technology used, but the sound of the components.    I’m not sure you would not be better off keeping the PS Audio preamp. I have not heard it, but it was higher level preamp when made. It seems your Denfrip...
Alternatives to McIntosh MC402?
Pass amps do not run hot at all. I ran a X350’s for many years. They would never get more than slightly warm. I recommend either a contemporary XA series or X. The X series have been getting better rhythm and pace in recent years.
JPS Labs Aluminata Power Cable On My Integreated Amp!!!
@garebear You must have me confused with someone else.
Starting a Classical Vinyl Music Collection
OP,   If you got virtually no improvement with the electrostatic cleaning. Then those disks were trashed. But this does not mean you should give up on used. I recommend going to a used record store. Each time you find an interesting disk. Caref...
What qualities stand out in really good solid state preamps?
You ask a good question. I have owned high end amps and preamps since the late 1970’s with Threshold being the first. I finally moved up to tube amps over the last decade.   Different people are looking for different sounds. Some want “high end”...
Luxman leaves me wanting
OP, You are describing the sound of Luxman solid state gear. It has that “high end” sound of emphasized treble and bass. But the sound lacks the midrange, natural balance and rhythm / pace. You can’t really equalize it away.    I would consider ...
Amp upgrade, speaker cables or both
OP, good write up.    I definitely agree with @soix on throwing a thick blanket in front of the window.   I would say that you have a very well balanced system, obviously carefully chosen. I think it would be a mistake to think of nudging one p...
