Tube Preamp - What to buy? Audio Research and Conrad Johnson are outstanding choices. ARC was my first solid piece of audio equipment. Built to last truly audiophile quality so will sound great regardless of age. If I was starting over it would be these two brands I would c...
What's your dream speaker? The WAMM is amazing… but actually not my idea of a speaker I would want to listen to every day . that holographic imaging is amazing, but not my cup of tea.I would think it would be somewhat like owning for your every day car a McLaren, for grocer...
Paying for equip? Ach wires or check or cc? I always pay by check. It gives my dealer more room to discount… typically by inflating the value of trade-ins, since that allows him to show he charged full price to the company he buys from.
Considerations prior to your next purchase I thought the definition of an audiophile was someone with an audio system of greater value than their automobile.
Buying used vs new? In general, who cares where it has been. Unless banged up or with grease dripping from it. Most likely bought by someone that knew something about high end audio. I guess if it is from an inner city pawn shop… I would be hesitant.
As you have moved on, are there any items you remember fondly...or most fondly? Acoustat 2 + 2. I brought them home with an amp capable of powering them. I couldn’t afford the amp and the speakers, so choose to get the amp first and by the time I paid off the amp no longer had a place large enough for the speakers.
USB vs. HDMI vs. Toslink Yes, a very high probability. Less is always more, and conversion is never a good thing.
What is the most important component to consider while building a new system? Of course they all matter. However. There are lots of rules of thumb with regard to different components. Over most of the last 50 years my system has had Speakers that were more in the 10% of system cost as opposed to the 30% or so recommended inv...
Best sub for music, I have only bought subs in pairs. Having been doing high end audio, I have learn certain abstract generalities that lead me to make choices without knowing facts. I wouldn’t mix. I would buy one and save to buy the second identical.when I went to ...
Buying used vs new? Absolutely. No moving parts. The preamp is the heart of a system. So leveraging your purchasing power by buying used is a great way to go. A good preamp will last many decades… Actually I have the first integrated amp I purchased in 1972. Still wo...
USB vs. HDMI vs. Toslink It depends on what you are using it with. Did you buy the Yggi or the Gungnir multibit? I think in audio only the optical is the lowest on the list. USB is what is normally used from a laptop. Depending on how high a sound quality you are shooting...
Best sub for music, Every time I bring up the subject of subwoofer the name REL is the answer. Including my audio dealer who has sold and installed many and of different brands… REL. Best and easiest to install with their setup and outstanding performance.Always two ...
What DAC upgrade made you say “DAMN, that sounds SO MUCH better than my last DAC”? I have owned many DACs. Starting at the ~$1K range and then higher: Ayre QB-9, Sim Moon 650D with the add on $8K power supply, Schiit Gungnir multibit, Schiit Yggi, upgraded Ayre QB-9 2020, Audio Research CD9Se, and Berkeley Alpha 3. The most prof...
Best Sounding Speaker Cables? @oldaudiophile... I scanned the article. Yes, I saw that they listened to some high end cables... they used Krell equipment. I also noted the source of the article. While I try and remain patient and just highlight positive things. This kind of BS...
Which Phono Pre? Good choice… that would be a very good and safe bet. |
